What are your thoughts on Susan Boyle?
I was wondering what your thoughts on Susan Boyle are? I say this as a music fan who is not normally interested in talent shows but something about Susan really intrigues me, and I find her voice wonderful. I know that she is probably not looked upon very well in music circles but if you look beyond the tabloid attacks I think there is a talented singer there.
I would love to see her do an intimate album of original songs. What do you all think? |

Her cover of Madonna's "You'll See" is one of my fave songs of all time - its mesmorising and as a massive Madonna fan pisses all over Mad's original.

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again - if Susan Boyle was a happily-married, slim, attractive woman, no-one would of ever really cared about her on Britain's Got Talent, no matter how good her voice may be. She certainly wouldn't of got all the crazy amounts of attention she received - that was just because she happened to be an odd-looking, eccentric person who could sing.
I don't dislike her and I don't begrudge her success, but it's the truth. |

However, if there was a singer of SB's calibre on this year's BGT, be she old, young, fat, slim or whatever, she would run away with the title because there would be absolutely no competition for a voice like hers. The standard is dire. |

I like both but Susan's voice is much more haunting which imo takes the lyrics to a whole other level.
back to the topic, which sorry guys i haven't actually commented on. i hope she does some original material on the next record. i think it is important for any artist to have a song which is first and foremost their song. |

She has a good voice but her type of music is not really what I'd listen to. I prefer upbeat songs to ballads.

Susan Boyle works well as an idea. The concept of a woman who is decidedly not good-looking and well past the traditional sell-by date of pop stars having a good voice has inspired millions and this is the only reason why she has succeeded. She would not have been featured on the show in the first place if she was young and good-looking.
Her voice is nothing special, relatively speaking. As a classically trained singer, I can comment on this with some certainty - she has a nice tone, definitely, but her range is extremely limited - around 1 1/2 octaves at the most. Her technical ability and versatility is decidedly zero, as she has shown absolutely no variation in her output throughout her two albums. Put simply, the concept of Susan Boyle is why she has achieved this level of fame. If she had the face of Madonna, she would be long forgotten by now. So my thoughts on Susan? She has achieved far more fame and fortune than her talent should account for, even in the world of showbiz. |

Adele has no demographic - she's selling across the board. Plus I live with 12 other teenagers - we all love Adele and couldn't care less about Susan Boyle. |

I think Adele does appeal to a somewhat wider audience as proven by the number of weeks she somehow has managed to stay at number 1. But to me, boyle, adele and other simular solo artists all come under the same heading, very forgettable. |

Susans style of music isnt my usual cup of tea but her music doesnt annoy me either, i think the woman has talent and she is very likeable so i hope her success continues, she has defied the odds and its great to see her finally get some happiness and success in her life.

It's only because she's weird but can sing a bit that she got where she is.
Not my type of music at all. |

Susan's got a great voice, and that's it - nothing else there. O artistic input and creativeness and told what to sing and how to do it by her Master Simon Cowell - he pulls the strings. In fact he's using her as a cash machine.
The last two albums promo all worked round Susan been bullied, how long can that go on for? 12 Albums? With her having ADHD on a high level, she will be very unpredictable and may end up back in the Priory hospital. Her fans think she will be the best selling female artist or all time and her new album will take over Thriller as the biggest selling album of all time LOL |

They also have a large and active sub-forum on their message board for "Condolences". What these two statements tell us: 1) Susan's hardcore fans are largely very old. 2) She seems to cater largely to non-music fans: i.e. those who are too old or isolated to enjoy any other current artist. |

My thoughts are that she has a nice voice and I wish her well, but the reaction to her and the following hype was so ridiculous I'm glad it's died down these days.
It used to make me burst my gut laughing when her hardcore supporters during and just after her stint on BGT used to insist she was a better singer than seasoned theatre performers who had been fine tuning their craft for years and years. I'm all for supporting an act/artist you enjoy but people went totally loony during the height of Subomania. |

she's a bit of a rarity, in that it's her unattractiveness that has contributed to her doing so well.quite the opposite of cheryl and the like.

Thought I'd quote you as it was you I had a conversation with about Susan - just thought it was worth summing up for everyone else:
A hardcore group of Susan fans are known for actively attempting to bring down any artist who goes big as they view Susan, in their own words, as better than any artist of ALL TIME. They also have a large and active sub-forum on their message board for "Condolences". What these two statements tell us: 1) Susan's hardcore fans are largely very old. 2) She seems to cater largely to non-music fans: i.e. those who are too old or isolated to enjoy any other current artist. "You'll all have heard of UK's 'Adele' by now, her second album is a huge hit. Interestingly, more folks have bought her album in digital form than hard copies (in other words, they paid to download the entire album). Adele is not about to steal Susan's most important records by the way, Susan retains title to the fastest selling album in history, most weeks selling over a million a week, best selling female debut album, etc., but Adele has set records for time at #1 for sure in the UK and may well be the UKs best selling artist in 2011 as she'll have the whole year nearly to achieve it." SuBo does not have the fastest selling album in History, that goes to the Beatles album "1"and these are the sales 12 million after 3 weeks 18 million after 5 weeks 20 million after 6 weeks 22 million after 7 weeks 24 million after 9 weeks SuBo's album not passed the 11Million yet, and that's after 17 months on sale. Just goes to show about her fans and what they think. |
