Just listened to Bright Eyes on the radio. The song about Dead Rabbits, where Art Garfunkel invites us to "follow the river of death downstream".

Has there ever been a more depressing song?

Bright Eyes is a little jolly summer song to skip too compared to Seasons in the Sun

Patches - Clarence Carter:

Two days later papa passed away
And I became a man that day
Everyday I had to work the fields
'Cause that's the only way
We got our meals
See, I was the oldest of the family
And everybody was depending on me
Or Ghetto Child by the Spinners:
When I was 17
I ran away from home
And from everything
I had ever known
I was sick and tired
Living in a town
Filled with narrow minds
And hate

They used to laugh at me
And children called me names
I would run and hide
Feeling so ashamed
Just for being born
I was just a boy
Punished for a crime
That was not mine
Or My Country Tis of Thee by Buffy Sainte Marie

That the nation of leeches that conquered this land
Are the biggest and bravest and boldest and best.
And yet where in your history books is the tale
Of the genocide basic to this country's birth,
Of the preachers who lied, how the Bill of Rights failed,
How a nation of patriots returned to their earth?
And where will it tell of the Liberty Bell
As it rang with a thud
O'er Kinzua mud,
And of brave Uncle Sam in Alaska this year?

My country 'tis of thy people you're dying.

Hear how the bargain was made for the West:
With her shivering children in zero degrees,
Blankets for your land, so the treaties attest,
Oh well, blankets for land is a bargain indeed,
And the blankets were those Uncle Sam had collected
From smallpox-diseased dying soldiers that day.
And the tribes were wiped out and the history books censored,
A hundred years of your statesmen have felt it's better this way.

Sally's Pigeons by Cyndi Lauper is a desperately sad song. It's about losing a childhood friend who dies due to having a back-street abortion. The music video especially chokes me.

I've always found Perfect Day by Lou Reed to be an extremely depressing song. I think I'm the only one though!

Agree with Luka. It is deceptive at first, but it really is a depressing song, once you focus on the lyrics.

Yeah I was coming in here to say that... Johnny Cash's "Hurt" is the saddest song imo, the amount of emotion the man pours into it...

And another choice is Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark".

4st 7lb - Manics
Would? - Alice in Chains
Promise to Try - Madonna
Sullen Girl - Fiona Apple
Wipers - D-7
A Short Term Effect - The Cure
Changes - Black Sabbath
Doll Parts - Hole
Toy Soldiers - Martika
The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever. I know it's not meant to be sad but I always found it really claustrophobic and beautiful at the same time, there are loads of other 60s songs that bring that out in me too like A Whiter Shade of Pale and The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore, they all sound like funeral elegies...

Another song that's also quite sad:

Here Today by Paul McCartney

But on reflection, I think Mother by John Lennon is very depressing:

A lot of Bright Eyes tracks are really depressing (I mean Bright Eyes the band!) - Waste Of Paint is probably one of the most depressing.

The whole of the album Hospice by the antlers is incredibly sad seeing as it's about terminal illness. Brilliant album though

yes. I cried a lot whilst listening to this when I was in a bad way a few years ago.

Possibility by Lykke Li is also really depressing.

I like depressing songs, though

Biko - Bloc Party
Was my love strong enough to bring you back from the dead
If I could eat your cancer I would but I can’t
So I keep writing these songs for you
To steal you from your grey
And we can dance in our front room again

So toughen up
Biko toughen up
Biko toughen up
I need you be strong for us
From a Distant Shore - Willard Grant Conspiracy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZw6G0vBxl4

Tomorrow I’ll meet my maker
My body broken on the shore
I’ll ask for my forgiveness and then for nothing more
Every night you lay awake for now and ever more
My breath will be the breeze you feel
From a distant shore

Give me hope give me light
Let the dawn follow night
I will stay awake until
There is nothing left to see
