Decades by Joy Division.

I used to find I Know It's Over by The Smiths hard to listen to but now think it's a bit camp and OTT

See Red by Eyeless In Gaza is very very sad.

Agree with Luka. It is deceptive at first, but it really is a depressing song, once you focus on the lyrics.”

You're not the only one. Most people complete fail to see the irony of it.

IMO, Lou Reed is the master of misery and 'The Kids off the album Berlin trumps all others with the opening lyrics:

'They're taking her children away, becuase they said she was not a good mother...'

oh, and the children crying and screaming 'muuuuum' as they are takne off into care.

There is a song by Damien Rice called 'Blower's daughter' that featured in the film Closer. It is awful and extremely self indulgent.

Anthony & The Johnsons - Hope There's Someone

Quote:
“Hope there's someone who'll take care of me when I die, will I go.
Hope there's someone who'll set my heart free, nice to hold, when I'm tired.”

Bat For Lashes - Sad Eyes

Quote:
“When you smile those sad eyes look sadder and sadder still.”

Both depressing in a very beautiful way I might add

Cripes so many to mention.

Goodbye by Billy Bragg is pretty damm downbeat as is Needle in the Hay by Elliot Smith. I could go on all day with stuff like this as I think there is little better in life than depressing music and red wine, and perhaps one of Keat's more fatalistic verses.

Its oddly cathartic.

There however nothing more truly depressing than the Black Eyed Pea's song, "I've got a feeling", which more than anything by Radiohead, Bright Eyes, or Joy Division truly makes me want to end it all.

I was going to say Billie Holidays 'Gloomy Sunday'. Im a big Billie Holiday fan and love sad, melancholy music.. But theres just something about 'Gloomy Sunday'. I can't listen to it. It's soo depressing.

Having said that though, I just managed to get through a listen of it. I can't listen to it when im feeling too down though.

Is gloomy sunday not the famous "hungarian suicide song" of urban myth fame.

So depressing so the myth goes that it was banned from the BBC for years incase it caused a lemming like mass march to the the white cliffs of dover to end it all.

It is a truly wonderfull, moving song though and the real story of its composer is far more tragic than the slightly cartoonish "suicide song" stories you can find on the net.

Leaving Me Now is the one of theirs that gets me. I remember seeing them in concert in Liverpool and that song put me on a downer for the rest of the night.

Clear winner for me.

Michael Jackson from The Jackson's 1984 album 'Victory'.

I agree, and quite ironic considering the lyrics are clearly written to have the exact opposite effect and sway people away from suicide. It's still a really good song but no way would I ever let a suicidal person listen to that.

The Smiths songs are IMHO a thing of great beauty and, despite the lyrics, are uplifting.

A sad song but beauiful
