You're not the only one. Most people complete fail to see the irony of it.
IMO, Lou Reed is the master of misery and 'The Kids off the album Berlin trumps all others with the opening lyrics:
'They're taking her children away, becuase they said she was not a good mother...'
oh, and the children crying and screaming 'muuuuum' as they are takne off into care.
