The The, "This Is the Day". I am convinced the song is about a man about to kill himself :Quote:
You could've done anything, if you'd wanted. -and "this is the day/your life will surely change" actually And all your friends and family think that you're lucky. But the side of you they never see Is when you're left alone with the memories That hold your life together like - glue means "this is the day when the poor guy ends his life" (a life can't a get a bigger "change" than being ended).

Me and a Gun by Tori Amos about the time she was raped is what first sprung to mind when I saw this thread's title. Depressing both lyrically and musically.

I found most of the In Utero album by Nirvana as depressing as hell.
I think it succeeds at being particularly depressing since half of it sounds like the drugged up ramblings of a madman at the end of his tether, which is basically what it is. |

I always find 'Jealous Guy' (prefer Brian Ferry's cover to Lennon's original but they are both good versions) puts a dampner on my mood.

My personal choice would be The Hollies "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother" - this is the only song that sends me cold when I hear it...
They played it at my uncle's funeral and if it comes on the radio, I have to switch it off after about 20 seconds...

The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - Roberta Flack. I don't think it's supposed to be sad but somehow I find it really depressing.

I'd nominate Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb High Hopes and When The Tigers Broke Free
Also Sinead O'Connor's She Moved Throught The Fair And Invisible Sun by The Police |

It's not just depressing, it's so damn sad! I'm not afraid to admit I was a blubbering mess when I first listened to it. There was also one released around the same time called "Excerpt from a Teenage Opera by (I think) Keith West about an old grocer that dies and a little kid asking his mother if he's coming back! And for any Scots person who's heard Sydney Devine will tell you, "Two Little Orphans" is another depressing song! |

Most of "After Murder Park" by The Auteurs, especially "The Child Brides" and "Unsolved
Child Murder" (the band's Christmas single! ).
