Artistic Madonna
I do believe that Madonna has pushed the political agenda more than any artist....especially on a mainstream global stage....her songs and promotion has challenged racial prejudice, homophobia, sexism, cultural predjuice (e.g. asian, gypsy/traveller), ageism, global issues (e.g. george bush, war, global warming, domestic abuse, HIV, general sexuality)...she also displays great artistry for combining imagery and music....
for me her most artistic songs are underrated as they are little less mainstream.... my faves are: til death do us part paradise The Beast oh father what it feels like to be a girl sanctuary any other suggestions for me to check out? |

Borderline, which is apparentley about interracial love.
She has several songs about Fame, such as Hollywood and Substitute For Love. Like A Prayer is about Faith. (In the years after her mother died.) I'm sure there are plenty more... |

One of my favourite Madonna songs is 'Swim' from the Ray of Light album. It follows 'Substitiute for Love' so well and the way it leads into 'Ray of Light' is brilliant. The three songs taken together make one of my favourite openings to an album ever.

Again i say this, but this is really the tip of the ice burg as to why i love Madonna!
I mean in her career she has always touched a subject so close to home for someone. And as Mr F pointed out even on her debut album Borderline really hit home with a LOT of people, interratial love was a sensitive subject and damn i am so glad she did! one of her earliest masterpieces! I love it when she addresses issues that can be political and social aspects into her music! American Life may have had strong symbolic political addressing which is why some may have been tuned off by the album but i think she did it sensitively, and with awesome Sonic beats. As a mother at the time she recorded ROL album and her Music album there were so many maternal issues she addressed, both reflective and forward thinking. Paradise (Not For Me) is a song i truly feel reflect that real avant garde side to her, that extreme left turn in Dance music lyrically. Beautiful song. The Erotica era hit experimental Madonna and many didnt know how to take it, which was the reason for a backlash BUT it is an overlooked era. And Bad girl, Waiting, Thief Of Hearts, Words, Deeper & Deeper, Secret garden, Whys It So Hard? and In This Life are wonderful thematically songs on the album as well as the title song itself Erotica. It addressed issues similar to Marvin gayes Whats goin On album. A masterpiece of Soul, and Erotica is a real Dance masterpiece for being so brutally honest. Like A Prayer is one my fave album of all time not because it is so off beat production and the artistic flow but like Mr F stated it is refining her own faith after loss. Her marriage and divorce, her celebrity, iconography etc. rediscovering herself. So many of these elements combined with these elemental Pop,Dance,Soul,Rock sounds....just amazing. Also many overlook Isaac on Confessions, it is a very spiritual song on the album. And she also highlights the rise and fall of fame on the overlooked Let It Will Be and Like It Or Not. WOAH, and damn theres loads more too.
