Choosing a 1080p HDTV
MediaFM
27-04-2011
I'm looking for a Full HD 1080p LCD TV with 100Hz and a generally really good picture for watching Blu-ray. Freeview HD is not essential, but it's good to have it anyway, but my main use for the LCD TV will be watching Blu-ray films. 24p is also required.

If you can find anything from the retailers Argos, Tesco, Homebase, Currys, PC World and Comet, then that would be much appreciated. I have been searching for a TV for days now and I'm currently undecided upon the Panasonic TX-L32S20B since it has limited picture settings and, according to a review by Trusted Reviews, has poor black levels (which contradicts a review by CNET UK.)

Thanks for any help.

OK, I have decided to either buy the Panasonic listed above, or the Samsung LE32C530.

Panasonic:

Buy Panasonic TX-L32S20B 32 Inch Full HD 1080p Freeview LCD TV at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for LCD TVs.

Samsung:

Buy SAMSUNG LE32C530 | 32" LCD TV - LCD TVs | Comet

Now, all I need is help in choosing the right one.

Also, I have a Panasonic Blu-ray player if that helps. Would the Panasonic TV be better suited to this or not ?

Try the Sony 32EX503

http://www.sainsburys.co.uk/sol/shop...ate_id=3086088

1080p, 100Hz, 24p support and a Freeview HD tuner. I have the 403 (same but without the 100Hz feature) and it's fantastic.

Oh, and the Samsung you linked to is only 50Hz.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I was told by a friend that 50Hz and 100Hz doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, but I'm not sure.

I would doubt many in these parts would recommend a Samsung over a Panasonic. Panasonic are generally regarded as being higher up the quality tree than Samsung.

The make of Blu-Ray should have zero effect on your choice of telly. However it may be that some features work better if they match. But the core function of playing a disk shouldn't be affected.

I went for the 50Hz model as I don't like the motion effect that 100Hz gives, I find it looks unnatural, but yeah, it's an excellent set. Also has a wide range of network features. Hook an ethernet cable in and it gives BBC iPlayer, Demand 5 and loads of other online video sources, and it'll also stream media from computers on the same network.

There are newer Sony's out now, but they really offer nothing new, so it's better to save a few quid and go for that one.

Do you think 100Hz will prevent the Blu-ray picture from shimmering ? My previous TV (Sharp Aquos LED) had a dark picture on Blu-ray and the picture always sort of 'shimmered'. It was 50Hz.

OK, I think I shall buy the Sony instead of the Panasonic. Thanks for the help both!

It's more likely your Sharp Aquos was incompatible with 1080p24 Blu-ray's native recording format.

I've just looked and they are out of stock. I don't think they do them anymore since I have been on other websites and they are also out of stock (EG Comet, Tesco etc.) What now ?

I'm not sure, but the salesman said that it did have the feature. It was the LC32LE210E model. I want to make sure I get the right TV this time.

Gah, this is so stressful! I have read some reviews about the Sony Bravia 403 having a dark picture, which puts me off from getting it. Please help!

Don't read reviews they are generally absolutely useless.

Go and check the sets out in the shops, but you can't really go wrong buying TV's from Sony or Panasonic - and from a 'proper' shop they will have 5 year manufacturers warranties.

I recently did a survey of the prices of Freeview HD set top boxes. Argos came out consistently the highest of the major on line retailers, including John Lewis. In addition the cost of their "extended warranty" was outrageous.

I strongly recommend you also include Richer Sounds in your list of retailers for comparison prices. Their 5 year warranty is also one of the cheapest and includes in home servicing if the set is over 32ins (check the latest conditions)

They have good bargains for "end of lines" or limited stock items such as this Sony 32in LED Full HD with Freeview HD for a similar price to the Sainsburys

OK, now I'm considering the Sony KDL 32EX403 again! I've heard the set suffers from motion blur due to the lack of 100Hz, but what do people here think ? Also, is the set reliable when it comes to picture quality with Blu-ray ?

Stick with the Sony and try Amazon or play.com. Why a high street retailer?

Really?

Also, I have an LG LH3000 HDTV downstairs and the Blu-ray on that is fine. Will it look as good on the Sony ? And is the Sony good for games like Wii ?

(sorry for all the questions, I just need to know I'm getting the correct TV)

The Blu-ray picture on the 403 is fantastic, at least, it is on mine. There's a little motion blur, but it's only really noticeable on such things as scrolling credits and the like, and even then it's minimal.
