Do you have any old devices you can practice on?
An old phone that might only cost £25 to replace would do.
Most sites about flashing tell you how to back up the original rom so that you can reflash it.
The main problem you might find is making sure all your data is backed up.
I normally don't have much data to back up so just flash over it.
I've flashed my TV, my media enclosure, my Vega and my Motorola defy, all without bricking them.
I have had the odd problem such as I tried to mod the defy and it went in to a 'boot loop', but I reflashed it again with the original mod and it was OK again.
Another important tip is to make sure you have the right rom or firmware for the make and model you are using.
Some firmwares and roms only work on a certain model or version such as UK or USA versions.
