Just cloning the whole drive will certainly allow for real startup benchmarks too.
Methinks it will need a short while to 'train itself' before full speed kicks in.”

Unsure if its worth a thread ... yet. Got to wait until pay gets resolved (recent job change ...) before the order goes in. Have heard the same about the drive needing some training, but it seems like a more realistic option than going straight for an SSD, I definitely need the storage!

Back on topic, I was chatting to my stepson last night, he had expressed an interest in buying a BB Playbook. His only reason for it? He's running a BB as his phone.

I suggested that if he really wants a tablet, the first option has to be the iPad. If he can't afford that, then go for the Advent Vega. After further discussion, we agreed that a laptop or netbook would be a much better option. It'll be used for University work, lots of typing, possibly a lot of storage requirements, so a physical keyboard and device with a few hundred gig of storage would be the best choice by far.

Another vote for a flashed Vega here. I to had issue getting it linked to the pc (64 bit Windows 7). Ended up doing it using Windiws 7 XP mode. Will keep watching for a stable version of Honeycomb

If its for university then a laptop is without doubt the way to go, quicker, much more storage, real keyboard etc. He can buy an iPad from his firs student loan lol.

Rather than the Advent Vega, if a 7" screen with the same 1024x600 resolution as the Vega is sufficient for you, the Samsung Galaxy Tab can be picked up for around £250 or a little more, and is overall a much superior device in every way.

But a 7" screen is as much use as a chocolate fire guard for university work where you should be doing a lot of word processing for the majority of courses.

That was the spec of the Kogan I ordered when first at £86. Unfortunately they changed spec a day after launch so I cancelled.

Yep a 1024 by 60 7" tablet to me would be ideal. Personally, I think 7" is the better size.

Yup, laptop (or netbook) is very definitely the way to go for him.

For sure, no point in even trying a degree level work load with less, especially when you look at most university's selling students stuff like Office or Windows 7 Ultimate for about £25 a go and remember most uni's use Office as the mainstay software for the vast majority of students so no compatibility issues to worry about.
