This album is constantly in my Janet top 3...sometimes my favourite when I'm REALLY into it. Of her 3 relative flop albums Damita Jo/20 Y.O/Discipline this is one that deserved to perform better than it did.
I blame Nipplegate - America completely overreacted and radio shunned her. It was also a mistake rush releasing Just A Little While as the first single....it's the worst song on the album for a start and doesn't represent the style of the album at all.
Fave tracks - Strawberry Bounce, I Want You, R&B Junkie, All Nite (Don't Stop), Slo Love, Like You Don't Love Me, Put Your Hands On and

Just A Little While is the best song on it and one of her most underrated singles!

unfortunately it was the super bowl performance that completely overshadowed this release. she lost out on a lot of valuable tv and radio promotion because of that. including a possible appearance at the grammy awards.

a lot of people in the industry turned they back on her. justin timberlake behaved particularly badly at the time. when the incident took place he looked like a naughty little boy being brought in front of the head master.

as far as he was concerned a continent wouldn't be enough distance between him and the situation!

07 All For You
08 20 Y.O
09 Janet Jackson
10 Dream Street

Damita Jo is my third favourite, behind janet and Rhythm Nation 1814.
I think she made the wrong choice for a lead single, I'm not too fond of that song. R'n'B Junkie is the best off that album.

I'm not too fussed on this album to be honest. The two singles were fantastic (Just a Little While and All Nite) but one the whole i just find it a bit of a chore to listen too.
Sexhibition and Warmth/Moist are pretty good too.
My favourite album is janet. and worst is 20YO. I have yet to listen to that album in full
I hate her interludes though. They are all well and good if they are tagged onto the end of tracks but seperating them into tracks and ending up with a 22 track CD does annoy me somewhat.
Can't wait to see her in July!! I hope she performs If

i will rank them.

The Velvet Rope
Rhythm Nation

Janet. (sounds a bit cringe at times i feel, also part of the Erotica movement which is )

Control(sounds a bit dated at times but still solid)

All For You (fresh but a bit dull)

Damita Jo (like All For You really)

20 Y.O

so yeah very varied indeed. But The Velvet Rope and Rhythm Nation are her masterstroke albums i feel. If i could pick two it would be those.

But of course i like Janet. and Control.

You can get cheaper but I wanted closer seats - this price is including booking fee and postage...it was £140 I think

I've seen her in 1995 and 1998. I've loved her since Control in 1986 - it's 25 years of love....a nice way to commemorate it!!

Love the outakes/bonus tracks even more than some album tracks

Put Your Hands On - SUPER SUPER HOT!!! Should've been a single, yet it only made the Japan edition

I'm Here - other Japan bonus

Outtakes
Could This Be Love - the fact it has the interlude at the end suggest it almost made the album...shame it didn't I adore it.

Put It On You

What Can I Say

Pops Up

Love Me For A Little While.....Just A Little While (Just Blaze Mix) - I class it as a song in it's own right as it's so different.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ziX-Z...eature=related

Ruff - Yet to leak in full....love it to though, it's hot

when i played some of Janet this morning i couldnt help but feel that the production was a bit of a stretch...i mean there are some big House anthems and FUnky numbers, but the ballads let it down i feel

I also feel that it was a weker attempt at doing something along the lines of Madonnas Erotica. Which was the basis for a lot of Janets later work and some Kylie too in that era. Erotica really set the standard for artists in the 90s.....which is why i feel saddened by that backlash Madonna recieved then really, While Janet recieved praise for the same reasons yet a much weaker overall album i feel.

Rhythm Nation and The Velvet Rope i think i play the most, i mean there is nothing i skip on those albums. Whereas with other albums i do feel like skipping a few, even Control!

I was reading back, I liked that somehow critics compared Rhythm Nation as her Marvin gayes Whats goin On, Janet as Lets get It On and The Velvet Rope as I Want You....as yet unsure what her Damita Jo would be rofl!

The ballad suite at the end of janet. is pretty damn perfect to my ears...What began with Let's Wait Awhile/Funny How Time Flies....progressed to Lonely/Come Back To Me/Someday Is Tonight reached a peak with the janet. ballads from Again through Any Time Any Place - her finest sexy ballad. The interludes of wind and rain and spoken snippets connect them perfectly. She tried to do it again on future albums but never quite got it this good again.

I also feel that it was a weker attempt at doing something along the lines of Madonnas Erotica..

Erotica remains Madonna finest moment - I haven't for one second since 1993 remotely connected the two....completely different records from completely different themes and production.

I read the Marvin Gaye comparison while reading reviews of janet. being Let's Get It On to Rhythm Nation's "What's Goin On"......don't recall Velvet Rope being compared to I Want You - and why would it be.

I know you love Madonna but must you bring her into every thread you disagree with

i don't agree. i`m a huge madonna fan, but erotica didn't set standards. why did erotica fail, when janet was huge? simple. janet was classy yet sexy. erotica was trying to hard to be sexy. madonna took on hypothetical roles on erotica whereas janet was more personal.

no, I meant when i read reviews, and on the the Velvet Rope Wiki page it did say in the critical review section

and also Erotica wasnt trying hard to be sexy, it effortlessly was. But was a concept album based on love. The album itself did NOT fail, it recieved a backlash of horrific proportions mainly due to the media being dicks. If it had not have happened i do think Erotica would have sold as much as previous albums most definitely.

And it did set standards actually. Without that album and that era then a LOT of artists would not have attempted doing similar. And with Primal Scream and the underground House movement moving into the mainstream then it certainly was the first album to really establish how it can be used.

A truly fantastic moment.

I agree, a fantastic album/era that Madonna has yet to top. You obviously have your mind made up and I have mine - not much point in "mines better than yours" internet arguing
