River Song and the picnic at Asgard

In Silence in the Library, River mentions various previous meetings between her and the Doctor (from her pov) including 'The Crash of the Byzantium' which we saw last year and a 'picnic at Asgard'.

We've just seen River and the Doctor at a quite memorable picnic - I wonder,,,

This was discussed a few days ago, a nice nod to Rivers future perhaps but I don't think they are the same event.

Asgard is the Heaven for Warriors, so I doubt the Utah setting would be the one that refers to.

Except if you mix up your Viking and Norse mythology, you'd get to Asgard in a flaming boat having been seen off with a feast consisting of good company, food and wine.

I'm liking the Viking idea.

Quote:
“Ragnarök refers to a series of major events, including a great battle foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin, Thor, Freyr, Heimdall, and the jötunn Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in fire. Afterwards, the world resurfaces anew and fertile, the surviving gods meet, and the world is repopulated by two human survivors.”

Sounds like this storyline in reverse....

In SITL she mentioned Picnic at Asgard in a 'wasn't that lovely' sort of voice which would hardly be appropriate for the picnic at Utah where the Dr gets bumped off

River could not use this particular picnic to sync her diary because after the picnic he's in no condition to make an entry in his diary.

The Viking-style cremation on a boat is partly because it looks good, partly established tradition (Ten cremates the Master) and partly an instance of a sport known as teasing the fans.

This particular picnic, I believe is

deliberately chosen by the Doctor to mirror the last supper. It is held on Good Friday, prominently features wine, and all his closest friends are present
