Storage issues on HTC phones!!!!
Is anyone else p**** off with HTC? I mean they make some of the greatest phones out there (in my opinion) and some of the most eye catching software of any manufacturer (again my opinion). However, when it comes to storage they really let their customers down. I bought the HTC Desire last year and one year later absolutely love it still. Having said that I'm having to upgrade soon, not because the phone is slow or outdated but because HTC put 512 MB of storage inside. Worse still, that 512 MB is mostly taken up by the operating system and the bloatware that's on the phone so I actually had 150 MB available when the phone was brand new.
I know that on Android 2.2 you ca move some apps to SD but that's not true for all the apps. Also when you move an application to SD part of it still uses the phone's memory. HTC's biggest crime is not that they didn't put enough space on the Desire but that it's a stupid mistake that they keep on repeating. The Desire HD has only 1 GB of internal memory, which is probably more like 512 because of the operating system (can someone confirm how much memory Desire HD has available please?). Every time HTC announce a new phone I get excited because I think they did it with the Desire, Desire HD, Incredible s, Desire s but surely they can't keep ignoring their customer's needs like this. Next thing I know HTC announces the Sensation dual core processor phone from with 1 GB of storage (again probaly 500 mb available like all the other HTC phones). Since HTC don't seem to get the message that people who pay for applications might actually like to store those applications on their phones and that people who own a smart phone LIKE a lot of applications. I'm forced to go to Samsung and get their phone which seems to cater to my needs. I'm deeply disappointed because I absolutely love HTC phones but I wonder how they can justify selling smart phones without memory, it's like selling a car without seats. |

Are you putting your content - music, photos on the SD card? You must have lots and lots of apps to fill up that space. Perhaps delete some apps that you don't use.
P.S. It's not a problem on the WP7 HTC phones because they have unified storage. |

I have the Desire and this is an annoyance for me as well.
(iPhone fanboys - before you post bear in mind your handset has its faults too) To be honest I haven't found many apps that won't go on the memory card although it's different for everyone. Getting more and more tempted to root my phone to get rid of some of the pointless bloatware. |

Yes, it is a pain, you don't need many apps to fill up the 150 Mb
Flash 10.2 12Mb Maps 11.3 Mb Market 3.5 Mb Email client 3 to 5 Mb You also needed 25 Mb free to do the last upgrade. What does concern me is that each app will inevitably grow at each upgrade leaving even less space. |

Probably best to start a separate thread asking that.

It's nothing to do with just HTC. Its all Android phones that have this issue.
It was google's idea to stop piracy but they now allow apps to the sd card in i think 2.2 and 2.3. |

Its a pain. I have all apps that allow it moved to SD card and I 'm out of space almost. Crap battery also. And the contacts menus are rubbish.

Got 16gb on my Galaxy SII and that's the lower limit, they are making a 32gb version as well (as well as being able to add another 32gb via SD on top). The Sensation won't solve this issue either as that will only have 1GB of internal storage. God knows why HTC still only give you these pathetic amounts in this day and age.

Its never been a problem for me on my DHD. I have literally hundreds of apps installed and still have over 760MB of internal space left over. Only just upgraded my SD card though as the 8GB one was full to burst.
My girlfriends Desire though is a different story. She's having to watch what she installs and only has about a dozen apps installed that she uses on a regular basis. |

This is a pain for me too on the Desire. Everything that can be put onto SD is. I blame poorly coded apps as well as the space issues.
Really can't see why flash needs so much space.... and Twitter seems to cache everything (pictures etc) but doesn't seem to let you clear it apart from deleting all your user info too. As for google earth - why does it take up so much phone space when installed on the SD card? |

I found the lack of space far too restrictive so rooted and replaced the ROM with a custom one supporting A2SD+ meaning most of the app data gets stored on the SD card - much more than the 2.2 Apps 2 SD. I now have well over 150 apps including some quite large games.
It's not a difficult process to root+ROM the Desire, you just need to read up on it so you know what you are doing. I'd certainly recommend it (but if you brick your phone it's not my fault! At your own risk etc!) Recommended reading: www.androidforums.com www.xda-developers.com |

I use App2sd to look after the cache. Do you use this or similar? |

If you really want the the Sense look, then get either ADW or GO and download their Sense theme. |
