I defy anybody to explain the last two episodes. I see even the doctor himself just wanted to have an adventure!

I miss the days of straight forward evil aliens/doctor defeats stories.

I am thinking of the 70's/80's though.....Sci Fi has just got more complex I guess!

I think in this instance, Moffat is trying too hard to be clever. That story could have been far simpler and still as compelling and mysterious... it reminds me of Lost these days. Like last week, I think there are too many ideas going on at once... I love a plot arc, but all these little random bits and pieces I am meant to remember when the main plot is so involved anyway. This plot was began over a year ago now (Silence will fall)... and I wish we had an absolute finish to it now...I've waited long enough for a resolution and still haven't gotten one. That said, Moffat is still a genius and I'll always tune in for more

rofl, I think I just started a similar thread, and I suspect the posters, judging by the comments on 70s/80s sci-fi (of which I would not have been old enough to have watched) probably confirms my fears

No, but they do require a viewer to think (an ever increasing rarity in tv dramas these days).

And you are supposed to be left wondering what is going on/has gone on. The storyline from these 2 eps isn't over yet. When taken as a whole (which my guess means the story will play out bit by bit in some episodes, and climax in the finale, which is why its a 1 part finale this year, not a 2 parter) the storyline will make sense. Just not yet.

It's not that hard to explain, once you accept that there are things they have deliberately left vague and mysterious to make us want to watch it again next week and find out a little bit more of the puzzle. We'll get all the answers eventually (I'm more convinced that Moffat is capable of that than the guys behind LOST), and no doubt he'll do it the same way he did the last series: major episodes like this which have a massive impact on the series plot arc, then "filler" episodes which appear to be just great one off adventures, but could have some meaning later on.

I think its moffats plan to change the format of the show. i must admit its compelling watching, but you have to be on your game to keep up on everything. single episodes like midnight are a great way to break up a huge story arc, I just hope next week will be a fun easy watching episode. dont get me wrong the last two episodes have been almost film-like, you have to give credit to moff and rtd for the way the shows gone from strength to stength

What do you mean you couldnt understand it? What you mean is you didnt get all the answers to all the questions Mr Moffat has just proposed. I hope the rest of the series is this good!

Just because a storyline isn't handed to you on a plate doesn't mean it is unfathomable.

Yes, a lot of questions are being asked after this episode. But that is kind of the point.

I'm watching it now on iPlayer as I was out earlier and I'm ten minutes into it...

two questions

1) What didn't it start from where it left off?

2) Why have I spent 4 months looking forwards to this crap?

anyone else concur

Press it. You won't win with the rest of the series if you failed to enjoy those two.

1) Because it didn't need to, and works when you watch the entire episode, because they fill in the blanks during some dialogue that happens later on.

2) Because you actually really like it, but you're a moany old git.

In answer to the title of the thread:

No, try paying more attention and putting the pieces together yourself rather than expecting to have the answers handed to you on a plate.

and if you don't have the answers it might be because they've not been revealed yet, so just chill out and wait till more pieces are revealed

I don't see why people keep saying this new format is confusing, complex or now unfathomable - it isn't at all. You just keep watching and it will eventually resolve itself. It's how a storyline works.

I think people are used to the Russel T Davies version of a story arc where you'd get a couple of key words running through the series foreshadowing the latest reincarnation of the Daleks in the finale. That's really just a dated monster of the week format and it's about time the one and only prime time sci-fi show British TV can muster followed the structure of the current crop of popular fantasy shows.

It is for a 10 yr old . . . my daughter has loved this show for the past few years - today she said she doesn't like it anymore . . . and I can see why. It's gone beyond "family" viewing.

And I think that's sad.

Yes, my 8 year old nephew has just phoned me and said it was boring. That really disappointed me as he has watched it since series 4 and loved it!

Although someone else on here said their 5 year old had no trouble explaining the plot, so it's got nothing to do with age.

I love it.

The (new) show seems to have matured at the same time as me. As a kid, I loved the silliness and humour when the show came back, as well as the fairly straightforward nature of the show. Now, it is still keeping me entertained, but with more of a dark/mystery atmosphere and with rather large expansive plots and character arcs.
