Finally cancelled my sky tv. Amazon were offering humax 500gb pvr for £230 is this a good price . It's about 3-4 months of sky subscription.
I feel like I've escaped LOL.

Seems a reasonable price - but if you were paying that much you were paying for a LOT of subscription channels, which presumably you didn't want anyway (as you've now paid a lump sum to get rid of them).

If you're not wanting subscription channels it makes GREAT sense to buy a Freesat PVR - but I'd have been more convinced if you weren't paying for a high subscription package

I did use to have time to watch the sport etc but have little time these days my sky box was at 90 % full with cbeebies.
My little boy will have to wait for some series links to kick in when the box arrives later in the week. That's the only difficult bit in my choice to cancel sky. Maybe they should come up with a one off payment to allow the record facility to operate, the £10 monthly charge soon adds up.

Well done!

You've made a smart move.

Expect quibbles from the 'sky mob' who monitor the Freesat forums and will often jump on any post from a sky dumper within a few minutes of posting. The rest of us will know that you've made a sensible decsion that will save you a lot of money in the coming months and years.

You should have subscribed to one pack and sports then. Then the PVR would have cost 6-7 months subscription.

And if your hard drive is full of SD CBeebies, did you need to buy the 500gb? The basic one is only £180.

No, he should subscribe to what he wants to subscribe to - or not at all if that's what he feels is best.

He's going to save a ton of money because he had the sense to dump sky.

If it's full of CBeebies, then it makes good sense to get the larger HDD - PVR's are supposed to be for short-term timeshifting, but if the kids use it for long term it's worth getting the larger drive (keep the kids happy).

The OP made a decision on what he felt would be right for him and his family not what you,me or anyone else think he should do.It's known as freedom of choice,an expression little known in sky circles.
Personally I applaud him and doubt that he will regret his decision.

I to have dumped Sky and will get my release on 29th May, I am going to buy a freesat+ box but am still in 2 minds whether to risk the new Samsung smt -s7800 or go for the trusty Humax , I believe the Samsung is due software upgrade on 2nd May so will hang on for a day or 2 before purchase. Glad to be joining team freesat at last - should have done it years ago and saved a fortune !

AFAIK the 500GB model is now the basic model - the 320 GB ones are old stock.

Although originaly a financial decision I did take time to check the families recording habits and as other posters have said most of these were non subscription channels. The monthly saving will pay for the odd movie or boxset. I will only miss ssn as the presenters were easy on the eye.

Its amazing how many people pay a fortune but only watch FTA channels. They also seem relieved like a pressure beens taken off them

The only sky channels Id ever watch are the sports one but sky would force me to pay for a package I dont want before I could get that so I just watch them online.

It's not difficult is it?.

Sky is subscription TV, you subscribe to it if you want the susbcription channels.

If you don't subscribe for that reason, you're obviously wasting money pointlessly.

Sky haven't 'forced you to subscribe' to a package for years now, you can subscribe to just one Sports mix if you want - but just as subscribing to any mix, there's a basic charge plus the mix.

And, it seems, there are a lot of people wasting money pointlessly.

A few fewer after I and other like me have pointed them in the right direction, though.

Sky's monopolistic pricing is still a national disgrace.

Of course, their shills here will try and defend them.

Resulting to insults is the usual last effort of those losing a discussion

However, in what way is Sky's pricing a 'national disgrace', they only make quite small profits (which are publically available) - so you think they should simply drop prices, lose money, and go bust?.

The only 'national disgrace' is what is paid for sports coverage, they should reduce that drastically and THEN lower prices in line with the reduced costs.

Not necessarily.

Sometimes people argue with people who are obviously idiots, fools, shills, or charlatans and make no bones about letting their opinions be known.

It's actually more likely the person that's losing the argument that will start to whine and mewl about a nasty name in the hope that it will divert attention from their own weak case.

However, in what way is Sky's pricing a 'national disgrace'
In the way that, because the are a monopoly, they can force people to buy things they don't wan to buy by using a pricing structure that no non monopoly would ever get away with.

The only 'national disgrace' is what is paid for sports coverage, they should reduce that drastically and THEN lower prices in line with the reduced costs.
There (apart from the word 'only'), I would certainly agree with you.

Or... cancel Sky, but keep the Sky+ sub, then if the Freesat PVR is £230 that is 2 years you get on the current Sky+ box before you break even.

You always then have the option to opt back into
Sky short term, if there is anyhting 'special' you wanted to watch.

Plusnet 'value' is very good if you don't use more than 10GB a month.

I wonder if there are any stats? No doubt there's a certain amount of inertia, with many customers taking out Sky when it was the only game in town for multi-channels and then not bothering to check what the alternatives are today.

Currently 12.50 a month unlimited although I think this is pretty competitive. Sky added the £2.50 because I cancelled tv.

If that's truly unlimited and unshaped (and you actually transfer a lot of date), that's a pretty good deal.
