I think I answered this with ardchoile but as you gave a lovely long reply...
This is it. 'I doubt he wants to keep Zainab and Syed apart' and 'he just wants Syed to be happy' are what WE feel and know as fans, but that isn't to say that was clearly expressed by the dialogue. They covered worried and angry but these two core points you mentioned - that are hugely important - was pretty much left untouched.
Now if I search my mind back to ABRC or DC, I could say yes based on dialogue emphatically. Could I based on tonight's? Maybe if I squint. Thursday's? Not a chance. It just is too vital a point to have to delve back in the past for, for me - it's necessary now, when the reconciliation actually happens. Even more so when you express the fear and resentment aspects well - as without the counterbalance of Christian's thoughts on Syed's feelings, genuine concerns appear selfish and careless. This just isn't true, but it's only not true if we desperately rack our brains. I know Christian loves him and I think he wants him to have his mum back because of that, but I'm left with no proof of that from these reconciliation episodes. Tonight was good, but in combination with Thursday's nightmare, even reasonably innocent lines like being upset about him meeting his mum sound dodgy indeed. I guess even Shakespeare couldn't salvage Povey...

Clarifying lines to reduce 'oh but I know he means/feels...'cos I saw it a while back' always helps.
I'm still off work ick so sleep pattern is off. Yes there's an ironic hilarity to that.

One measly line would have done. They do it to annoy us.
