I really am in need of a decent mobile phone. My current one - a Samsung X600 is 7 years old, the camera broke 5 years ago (just displays green now) and the Web browser is just WAP.

I've had an iPod Touch for the past 3 years and constantly use it so my ideal choice of new phone would be the iPhone. I've found a good contract with Tesco Mobile: http://phone-shop.tesco.com/tesco-mo...entTabId=tab_0 that would do quite nicely but my question is: Is it worth getting an iPhone 4 or would it be better to wait an see if the iPhone 5 is released later in the year?

Some rumours talk about a September release. Personally I would wait.

I would get the Tesco deal and get iPhone 4, as you what apple will be like when iPhone 5 is released, everyone will jump on bandwagon and get iPhone 5 and apple will not be able to keep up with demand etc. I know there is an antenna issue with iPhone 4 but a bumper solves this issue. It’s all speculation still when iPhone 5 is released, I personally don’t think iPhone 5 will not be released till 2012, iPhone 4 is available now, I mean really what is the differences between 4 and 5? if you’ve seen what is believed the iPhone 5 pictures, I can’t see much of a difference

hope this helps

I'd wait.

It'll most likely either be announced at the WWDC in June, or at the "Fall Event" in September.

Seems strange to wait for a device that has not even been announced yet....

I would have to go with the iphone 4 now.

1) You won't be able to get a iphone5 from Tesco in September or at the current price/deal. Your going to be waiting much longer for Tesco.

2) The iphone4 was a big update over the previous models. The iphone 6 will be the next 'big/noticable' release not the 5.

3) By the time you get your iphone5 from Tesco i suspect you'll be waiting/wanting the iphone6.

But it *will* be announced. So far Apple has stuck to an extremely predictable schedule for every iPhone. There is speculation that this year it will be June rather than September, but either way there will be an iPhone 5 this year.

I've upgraded to an iPhone 4 now, because I can still get £150 for my 3GS on Mazumamobile.

If I wait until iPhone 5 (or 4S or whatever) is released, the 3GS is two models back which will push the resale value down. OK, the price of the iPhone 4 would come down as well but I'm prepared to take the chance that I'm not spending more now that I would in September.

Thanks for your replies.

I know Apple are usually quite secretive about their new products and probably won't announce the iPhone 5 until a few weeks before release - like they did with the iPad 2.

While the past release history suggests a new iPhone this year, why would they suddenly release a white iPhone 4 if an iPhone 5 was just around the corner?

Because they can - Apple has customers with more money than sense (look at the Mac forums - there are black phone owners who will gladly buy white ones despite the only difference being the colour!)

There are also people who don't care about the latest and greatest. The iPhone 4 is more than enough. Look at the way people are still willing to get the 3Gs because it is now reasonably priced on contracts, despite its age and that Apple might be dropping support for it soon.

If we assume the iPhone 5 won't be a massive change, it is still worth building a white iPhone 4 for all the practice it gives Apple/Foxconn, because they can use the experience to get a while iPhone 5 out on day one.

I would hang fire. At the very least wait until next month and see what apple announce at WWDC. If apple don't announce the new phone then, it will probably be September and you just need to decide then whether to get a 4 then or wait the 3 months it will likely be for the 5

I'm waiting for something on the five. I was going to go android just for a change but after using friends phones decided not to as the cost is the same (for the top phones). I was also getting fed up with touch screens, but, that seems something you can't get away from now.
the Summers here and my 3G will keep going until the likely September release. I would then expect to have the 5 for another 3 years.....

How can you keep the same phone for 3 years? 3 months is a struggle for me, longest I ever kept a phone was a Nokia 3310 for a year, but then that had as much hype as the iPhone 4 back then.

Considering the iPhone 5 will have the Apple A5 expect twice as fast processing and 9 times faster graphics, I would say wait till September.

Apple fans will be out buying a white iPhone 4 just to look trendy. They probably think having a black iPhone 4 will make them look like a looser

They will probably go out and buy an iPhone 5 come the autumn. Sadly there is no hope for these people.

Do you have a hard on for YouTube videos ripping apple or something?

Think that's atleast 4 you have posted in the last week and it's not even a new video...

Some things are certain in life... Death, taxes, you and moox obsession with posting shit like this in apple threads!

I would wait until Schlumberger release their new phone, with it rooted and running a custom goat rom it will do some serious damage to the iPhone5.

I would go for the iphone 4 now as there are plenty about and a lot of good deals out there. If there is an iphone 5 it will probably be an enhanced version of the iphone 4. Its such a good phone there's not a lot you can really improve on as the technology is not there at the moment. Except maybe better camera, better battery, maybe include flash, lose the silent button, iron out a few more bugs etc etc

The silent switcher is an absolute essential for me. All my smartphones have had a silent button or a one-touch silence option since my first Palm Treo! I'd be very unhappy if Apple removed that!

lose the silent button
That thing has saved my skin on more than a few occassions! If it goes I'd weep.

Because I get a good phone and then use it as it was meant to be used and not as a fashion accessory..the phones that have come out since do nothing my phone can't do that I need.....It also means I can afford to buy an iPhone 5 outright without a contract because I haven't been wasting my cash on just trying to keep up...
