Does anyone here have any experience working with the companies that produce the likes of the channels that are on Virgin Media?

Maybe this is just down to my own personal taste and I'm wrong but I think they could be so, so much better.

This is about MTV, Viva, MTV Base, MTV Dance, VH1, 4Music, TheBox, Kiss, Smash Hits, Q and Magic.

Ignoring the fact that about half of them run programming for the best parts of the daytime schedule, which isn't needed as Virgin carry a plethora of channels which could run those shows, why do they all play the same old tired videos?

There must be thousands of pop videos available for the channels to play but it seems if it isn't by certain big name artists back catalogue then they don't want to know.

Is it all about record labels pushing their own? Or royalties they have to pay?

Just play something different please!

Even this last week we've had Kate & Will's stag party which have been the same videos in a different order. I doubt either of them or their friends get down to Willow Smith!

The there is MTV Base and it's Dancehall Queens. I thought that that was a genre specific to the West Indies and thus would introduce a variety of artists that they don't normally show. Nope, to qualify you had to be black, female and already played twice an hour across their channels. Hello Rihanna and Beyonce.

I thought I'd hit the jackpot when I got a HD box and MTVNHD appeared. They show a vastly varied array of videos but even now that seems to have been consumed by hour after hour of Rock am Ring.

GRRRR!

I don't know what you're expecting to be honest, people generally have music channels to have on in the background, or just to flick through and check out the latest videos. People want to see the freshest most up to date music from popular artists, not 'old' videos (especially because most old videos are really boring, nothing like what they are now with huge budgets).

If you want a variety go to YouTube. I love music channels and I'm glad they show modern music 24/7 across 20-ish channels. It's brilliant.

If they did that it would be great, but they don't.

Apart from MTV, Viva and 4Music, most of the channels do show 24/7 music (apart from adverts obviously).

Just out of curiousity, lets see what all the channels are showing:
MTV: Teen Cribs
Viva: My Super Sweet 16th UK
MTV Base: The Base Chart Show: Wynter Gordon ~ Dirty Talk
MTV Hits: Nothing But Hits: advert
MTV Dance: Your Knight on the Turntable: Chase and Status - Blind Faith
VH1: Top 50 Movie Anthems: Survivor - Eye Of The Tiger
MTV Rocks: Top 10 Anthems of 2006: Advert
4Music: 50 Biggest Selling Girls Of The 21st Century: Katy Perry ~ I Kissed A Girl
The Box: UK Airplay Chart: Advert
Kiss: This Weeks Most Played: Enrique ~ Tonight I'm Loving You
Smash Hits: UK Hot 40: LMFAO ~ Party Rock Anthem
Q: Q Anthems: Advert (cats with thumbs - love it haha)
Magic: Big Wedding top 50: Michael Jackson ~ Dont Stop Til You Get Enough
Kerrang: Explosive Rock Rumble: The White Stripes ~ Blue Orchard

Yes I was a tad bored haha

But that seems like enough variety to me, not forgetting MTVNHD (In the bedroom, not got it here) and 1000s of Music On Demand videos.

I think they're awful as well to be honest, 20 channels of the same videos over and over, I thought MTVN HD would be brilliant but it's mostly random live sets from rock bands now.

It's all to do with money at the end of the day. I think record companies pay them a lot to play certain videos so they get the most publicity and therefore get them in the charts. Sadly they seem to want to promote the most tedious rubbishy songs.

If they kept playing GOOD videos, we wouldn't be having this discussion would we?

Absolutely spot on.

And you can flick through the channels and be virtually guaranteed to always see videos by the same few artists (Rihanna / Beyonce / JT etc etc) all the time.

i changed over to virgin to save a bit of money, so now i just have viva and the hits at the moment. they are awful. just tv programmes usually in the evening. i think the music starts at 2am!

i do miss the other channels to be honest, but like someone else said it is so easy to watch music on youtube.

The only technicality I'm certain of is there being a magic 'synchronise ad breaks' button

I'm not sure how much the lack of variety is to do with back catalogues/rights etc, so much as the availability of good source materials for older songs? The other night one of the channels showed the Pointer Sisters I'm So Excited video - complete with 'ingrained' VHS rolling and tracking issues
