Christian ADORES Syed, of course he wants to be with him forever - he's also a bit insecure at the moment with all the Masood stuff, perhaps, and even may feel guilty (irrationally, but humanly) about being instrumental in the split between Syed and his family - after all, Christian does know how important they are to Syed.
Taking the opportunity to propose, afforded by circumstances seems plausible to me. It doesn't take away anything from the proposal as a declaration of love.
Because it may be coloured a little with concern and regret and the desire to provide Syed with proof of his firm, steadfast and committed love for him, a proposal at this time is human and endearing really.”

I agree with you concerning why and what christians proposal means and why he does it. To me it comes as you say from a place of love.
Surely, even if i comes from a wish to provide syed with a family and security that is an act of supreme love.
