I really would like to get this after seeing my mates one but just cannot believe how much they cost.
The phone seems to be over £500 without contract which you can get an ipad for at the same price.
I think I would rather have the ipad.

I have both and they have different advantages, in the house I tend to use my iPad for email/web and so forth but its generally to big to take everywhere so I make do with the iPhone.

You can't really compare them as they have different uses.

The iPad is a great device and if you have a solid phone that you like but you enjoy the iOS feel the iPad would be a great investment.

Hey you are trying to compare 2 opposite terms. These both are for different purposes.

So, you want an iphone but would rather have an ipad. The difference in price is not a factor.

Erm.. isn't this obvious?

You can't make calls on the iPad.....I hope you realize that.

You can't use the iPad away from WiFi.

So you would have to factor in a cost for that also.

Indoor or WiFi area use only ... Probably iPad.

Outdoor use ... Probably iPhone.

I use an iPad indoors.

If I go out then my iPhone is in my pocket.

I also have a PAYG MiFi adapter so I could use either outdoors.

It's horses for courses.

However an alternative to both is the iPod Touch. Like an iPhone without the phone bit, again reliant of WiFi.

Size of an iPhone (ish) but cheaper than either the iPhone or iPad. Starting price of £193 for the cheapest model.

Untrue.

I was quite happily using my iPad over Easter with not a single solitary WiFi network in range. Surfing the Interweb and sending and receiving e-mails perfectly happily.

You are aware that you can get iPads that accept a mobile phone SIM?

Indeed. Also not every feature of the iPad requires a data connection (though a lot obviously do). Even on a wifi only iPad away from a data connection they could read newspapers downloaded at home, read books, play games, type out a letter and much much more

Quite right. I made the, perhaps erroneous, assumption that the OP may not have wanted to pay the full £499 + contract for the the 3G version.

I wouldn't want to pay £500, up front, for either. I think I paid around £200 - £250 for my iPhone with a 24 month contract. Then I traded my old iPhone 3G in for about £100.

Then again some people don't like, can't get or just plain can't afford a contract.
