strange cake question
My mum use to make a cake years ago, she had this portion of mixture that had a special name (can't for the life of me remember it) she would use that in the cake mix and then keep back a portion of that cake mix for the next time she baked it. I can't remember if it was kept in the fridge or in a warm place
![]() The original portion of mix, came from my aunt and had been going for years. I seem to remember it had a yeasty smell to it. The cake was reallly nice but I have no idea what it was called. Does this sound familer to anyone or am I just totally bonkers!? ![]() Sadly my mum passed away last year and I can't ask her my baking related questions anymore

I am sure we did this at school in cookery lessons - German Friendship cake or something?
I have no idea of the recipe now but you kept part of the cake mix and passed it to a friend, they made the cake as well and kept a bit of the mix for one of their friends and so-on. |

I remember something like this at school, I think it was called Herman cake, you had to llok after it, then divide it in 2 and give some to a friend.
We made it and I was sick for days afterwards... |
