Desire S v Galaxy S
Wife now using my GS and I decided to have a go with the Desire S.
Galaxy S definately wins on screen with Amoled but at 4 inches I found it a tad big.... Desire S has: Alumium unibody, great quality feel to it. 3.7 inch superb LCD. 768MB RAM 1 GHz Scorpion processor 1.1GB memory but came with an 8gb card in the box. 4 touch buttons at the bottom like most Androids. 5mp camera with an LED flash. (better than none) Gingerbread already on there. Updated HTC Sense overlay but not as some sites state 3.0! Still great improvements over last year's HTC devices. Galaxy S: Plasticky & creaky. 4.0 inch Amoled... it's defining feature! 51MB RAM 1 GHz ARM Cortex-A8 processor 2 touch buttons and mechanic home button. 5mp camera no flash Froyo out of the box but gingerbread is rolling out. Trade handsets have it and networks are working on theirs. Touchwiz overlay... slow, clunky and unintuitive. That's the main spec differences out of the way... now onto using them. The galaxy s's super slim body and large 4.0 inch screen makes it feel almost tablet like to use, I found it impossible to use single handedly especially with it's glossy slippy plastic. Unlock key on the side is perfectly handy though compared to HTC sticking there's on the top. The vibrancy and size of the screen make it amazing to play games and video on. Sound quality wise I can't fault the Galaxy S calls are loud and clear and so is music playback. Network signal strength is sometimes flakey though... in work we can't get a good signal (on any network) and sometimes it takes a manual search or reboot to get the phone to connect. This is not unique to us, many report it on the web with the Galaxy. The galaxy s has crashed a few times and lags a bit during use. The Desire S's metal body and rounded back make it feel more phone like, and solidly built, and it's 3.7 inch display is the same resolution an the Galaxy's but is super LCD. Games and videos are sharer (same pixels, smaller space) but just seem a little, just a little, dull compared to the Galaxy's but you are saving battey power! Sound quality is loud and clear and no problems with signal quality although if you death grip the phone you can cause it to drop as the battery compartment acts as a part of the antenna, same with wifi on the upper section. The OS on the desire s is fluid and very quick, no crashes or detectable lag at all. Battery wise I'm getting a bit longer from the Desire S than the Galaxy S. All in all it's a close run fight but with a metal body, gingerbread, flash, newer chips, more RAM and a preference for Sense I changed to the Desire S from the Galaxy S and don't regret it one bit. hope this helps someone having to decide... I'm curious is the price increase so much greater to get a Galaxy S2? it seems to be minimal anywhere I look and spec wise its a much better phone.
Although I agree about Samsung build quality, it's never been that great. |

(I do have two hands just the other needs to be doing something else while my left holds the phone)I thought for the design and build quality the Desire S deserved a go... Current Pricing: Galaxy S £300 on Amazon (we paid £337 with o2 a while back) Desire S £349 o2 Galaxy S2 £399 on o2. |

I think a better comparison would be Galaxy S vs HTC Sensation, which is HTC's new premium phone. It has the bigger screen and is aimed at top end users like GS

The Desire S is a mid range phone designed to keep desire fans happy that wanted an upgrade, and is comparable directly to the original Galaxy S in spec and pricing. |
