Do you have any albums by any artists that you like which you felt were overhyped?

Mine are

Madonna - Like A Prayer. Controversial as anything I know, and its a brilliant record, but I feel that COADF, Ray of Light and Erotica are superior. It does have the fabulous and underrated tracks Promise to Try and Oh Father, which imo rank up as some of her best tracks. Its still a fab album though.

Michael Jackson - Bad. As I've explained on another thread, I just feel that it sounds far too much a product of its time, plus I feel that Man In The Mirror and Smooth Criminal are pretty overrated. The album tracks aren't as strong as some of the others on the rest of his albums imo.

Kylie Minogue - Light Years. Still a great pop album, but far too camp imo. On a night Like This is one of her greatest songs, but I much prefer the disco sound of Fever and the experimental Impossible Princess.

Hounds of Love - Kate Bush.

Never did understand why it's so acclaimed. It's a great album but The Kick Inside, Lionheart, Never Forever all had equally as good (if not better) pop songs as HOL and The Dreaming is equally, if not more challenging than The Ninth Wave, so I'm really unsure why it's constantly held up as the pinnacle of her career.

just thought of another one....

Talking Heads:77 & More Songs About Buildings and Food

When I was just getting into TH people were often recommending that I start listening to their first 2 albums first as these were the best. Luckily I didn't take that advice, as chances are I wouldn't have made it to their third album and subsequent albums, which I much prefer.

Rihanna - Loud
It's a good, fun pop album but I really didn't think it was all THAT great. Maybe I was just a bit disappointed after Rated R, I loved that.

The Fame - Lady Gaga.
I only really like a few of the unreleased tracks from it, and think she had far better material that could've been put in the place of songs like Money Honey and I Like It Rough. Plus it seems really disjointed as an album, there's no flow to it whatsoever. Love every track off The Fame Monster though, and everything I've heard so far from Born This Way.

21 - Adele.
I was really disappointed with this album - only like 3 or 4 songs, including the singles. Thought 19 was far better. Only listened to it a few times though in fairness; maybe it's a grower.

Rihanna - Good Girl Gone Bad, I liked it at first but it got tiring with all the re releases.

Adele - 21, I love this album but I think all the hype and overexposure its getting is probably a bit excessive now - its still a great album though

I love '21' but I don't like '19' except from 'Chasing Pavements' and 'Make You Feel My Love'

Beyonce 'Dangerously In Love'
Destiny's Child 'Survivor'
Alicia Keys 'The Element of Freedom'
Jennifer Hudson 'Jennifer Hudson'
and definetly Lady GaGa 'The Fame'

I loved all the singles from these and a few album tracks, but overall I was dissapointed.

I think Mezzanine was so much better

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

Lots of Metallica fans see this as their masterpiece, but honestly, with the exception of a few tracks (most obviously 'One') I think it is the weakest of their 'classic' five albums, and for that matter not as good as Death Magnetic either. The main problem is the production values, but even if it had been produced properly, the songs just don't have as good riffs and solos as their other work, IMO. I'm a massive Metallica fan as well, have seen them live twice.

Lady GaGa - The Fame.

I wasn't crazy about this album when I first heard it, and was really disappointed as the first time I heard any of them was when they were live at Oxegen, and they sounded way better. Then I saw her Monster Ball, and I was right.

Live Lady GaGa >>>>> Lady GaGa On Record.

I agree with Like A Prayer. I do LOVE Madonna, and I love this album, but I don't think much about it was particularly 'new' or 'innovative' at the time; all the styles of songs had been done by others. Now let's get this absolutely straight; I'm not saying it's not a great record, it is; I'm simply agreeing that it is overrated in terms of the heights it's often critically elevated to.

I agree - I thought Erotica and Ray of Light were much more innovative

Seconded; and in terms of genuine pop music 'innovation' I'll always cite The First Album first, for updating the entire dance music mainstream by taking that sound and style overground, and then True Blue (discounting the last two filler tracks).
