Do tomatoes taste better...
if you leave them in the fridge for a couple of days after their best before date and then eat then, when they are a slightly pale colour, firm and cold?
Or is that just me?

I don't like cold tomatoes personally.
Still warm'ish straight out of the greenhouse for me.

If you have fresh tomatoes, that you have picked yourself, don't put them in the fridge. It takes most of the flavour out of them. They can be left in a cool place for quite a long time. They then have a nice musty smell and better flavour.

Supermarket ones are rubbish. They have to have a very strong smell to be any good.

I cant stand cold tomatoes. I find some in this country you buy from supermarkets have no taste to them at all.
The best tomatoes i have tasted were in Italy.

You can't beat seasonal Scottish tomatoes. Pick the green bit off and sniff...lovely! Distinct smell that you never get in bog standard supermarket toms. They're nice and fleshy too with less of the gooey seedy bit than supermarket toms.
I prefer tomatoes nice and firm, I'm not keen on overripe squashy ones. |

Sometimes with bog standard supermarket tomatoes it's nice to have them cold to have a bit of a crisp texture, either sliced in a sandwich or chomping on cheery toms with some cheese and deli meats.
It would be different with decent tomatoes though. You'd want to make the most of the flavour. |

I'm suprised no-one agrees with how I like tomatoes. I can't be the only person who likes them like that!
I wil eat them any other way as well, just as long as they have not been cooked in anyway. I hate that. I just likie them as they come. |

Unless you cut them tomatoes don't smell of anything once you've taken them off the vine.

I prefer tomatoes nice and firm, I'm not keen on overripe squashy ones. And seeing as you don't eat the green part, it's immaterial what it smells like. Though, I do agree with you that tomatoes grown in this country do taste better than those which have been on boats and trucks for aaaaaaaages from foreign places. |

I find sprinkling salt on them really brings out the flavour. First had this on a boat in the Peleponese and it converted me to salty tomatoes.

The green part of any tomato is the part with the smell. The actual red fruit doesn't smell like that.
And seeing as you don't eat the green part, it's immaterial what it smells like. |

Only vine-on tomatoes have that lovely, garden-y, herby smell and I disagree - I think some of the smell does get retained by the skin simply through absorption.
