What happened to the boatswain?

(The boatswain was the character played by Lee Ross)

Maybe I'm imagining this, but one moment he was in the hold with Amy, Rory and Toby, and then he disappeared completely without explanation; he only seemed to reappear at the end of the episode with the rest of the crew when the Captain's flying the ship away.

Am I misremembering? Was his disappearance explained, and I've just forgotten it already?

It was odd, continuity error i think.

This really annoyed me too, i thought i'd just missed him getting taken by the siren but watching back no there was just no explanation, plus he was with toby and rory at the time so if the siren had got him in that room she'd have got them too......annoying!

A lot of people have brought it up in the episode thread, so you're not alone!

Pretty sure it was down to bad editing.

You're question doesn't make sense, but I'm guessing you mean "when did the boy get stabbed?"

He didn't. He was ill and the siren was taking anyone who was injured or sick. I think they said he had typhoid.

EDIT: oh you corrected it, I get what you mean now. There's another thread on this. The answer is no-one knows. General consensus it that it was a continuity error/poor editing that missed out him being taken by the siren.

Do you mean the one that the boy cut so he couldn't escape, and then once his partner in crime was taken, mysteriously disappeared from the ship.

poor editing then and quite a big blunder

Im sorry but theres no way that was a continuity error :L
SM is a very intelligent writer and uses top directors to make his show. A misplaced prop yes, but a pretty important character, not a chance, how could you forget to put a character in or explain his death. With the other not mentioning his disappearance and that old woman showing up again, it has to be silence related

Unless there's a stray crack lurking forgotten among the powder barrels on the Black Pig, or whatever the ship was called.

I'm surprised there's not a dozen theories on it by now.

The Bosun is really the midwife sans eyepatch and in fancy dress.

Thats just finding the little drops from a barrel, I don't see the silence would fit into this at all. It's bad editing no matter how you dress it up,

That's what some people said when the Doctor turned up with his jacket on after the angel grabbed it in last season's angel 2 parter!

Thats true, but in this case I'm inclined to think his disappearence was filmed, but ended up on the cutting room floor. IIRC this episode was only 43 minutes so I'd say it was trimmed for some reason.

I agree. I was a big supporter of the "two doctors in the forest" theory, but that was because there was a lot of evidence to support the theory other than the costume change. I think here, for whatever reason, they had to edit his disappearance out, and it just wasn't done that well. It's not really a big deal in the scheme of things, but was rather clumsy.

Maybe he was standing just off camera?

Clearly, the boatswain is a Silent.

Wasn't he shown in Confidential getting onto one of the medical beds in the space ship?

Probably disappeared due to a deleted scene.

Had to go answer the phone at one point and the guy had gone when I got back so presumed he was shown being taken.

Wasn't till I read the episode thread that I found out he just disapeared with out explanation.

Possibly but he's on the Siren ship with the other Pirates at the end so he was taken by the Siren.

Why Rory and Toby were not taken if the Siren got into the powder room I don't know.

Maybe a Silence was there and we lost a chunk of time but at the moment I'm putting it down to bad editing (which I didn't for the 2 Doctors in FotD).

If we have another chunk of time go missing in a later episode I'll change my mind.

It was a remarkably glaring error (assuming it was an error). It's very surprising that they wouldn't have spotted it, which does make me wonder if it had a significance that will only be understood later.

He's not Owen from EastEnders (well, he is, but bear with me) — he's Kenny from Press Gang! Also, he's shown to be on the alien ship in the closing moments, when they're actually flying to the Dog Star. So there's a bit of his story missing, but he obviously meets the Siren at some point.

It's a shame - all it needed was him to leave the room. Or for a quick exchange between the Doctor/the Captain and Amy/Toby to establish he left in a tantrum.
