Rooting gives you root access to the phones operating system in this case Linux.

It allows you to install custom roms which are much better than the ones that come with it. Many other things as well.

The prime function of rooting is in fact to remove bloatware or add functionality
Its similar to jailbreaking.

If you choose you can then switch to a custom ROMs that at their best are simply debloated and at worse very flakey and with their own bloat.

Even if you don't want to update to a custom ROM rooting allows you to run many helpful apps such as advert blockers, back up programs etc that need root privalages to run.

When I was a lad 'rooting' meant rumpy pumpy, hide the sausage, bury the bayonet etc. I think with a phone it lets you mess about with the operating system; sometimes the old days were better

Gosh, this all sounds very interesting. I too have a Desire, and would love to remove all the pre installed crap from orange, that takes up room and can't be uninstalled like Uno and Traffic TV. Orange chat etc

If rooting allows you to do this, what's the easiest guide to follow to root my phone. I'm technically crap with these things, but can follow instructions like tun off, hold down volume and blink twice then turn upside down for 10 seconds etc!

Get yourself over to XDA forums. Everything you need to know/download is on there. However spend sometime READING what is already there. Do not ask 'how do I root my phone' or 'how do I install a custom ROM' as all these questions have been asked and answered in the past. There will be simple to follow instructions mainly along the line of "download rooting programme to your PC, connect your phone, press root". You may want to stop there and follow instructions on how to remove the crap you don't need (I can recommend System App Remover from the market which is only available for rooted phones. You will be able to use this to get rid of any Orange apps). However if you want a custom ROM with all the fun that brings then you will need to install ‘ClockworkMod Recovery’ to enable you to do it. But I say again read before you start doing anything.

Rooting your Desire is easy and low risk. Installing custom ROMs will introduce higher risks but if you go for it you will be pleased at how fast your phone will be.

I just went to 2.2 (only from 2.1) on my X10i and the difference is unbelievable, it is so much smoother and quicker I recommend rooting then adding a new firmware, READ UP PROPERLY tho as it can be complicated and it can brick your phone (not that easy to do luckily but still possible) response times on my X10i are so much quicker its like having a new phone (now I actually like the damn thing) lol

All i did was debrand my Desire to a standard WWE (world wide english, aka debranded, international) ROM to remove all the bloatware from Orange. The standard ROM was an official HTC signed ROM as well so removed all the crap with minimal risk and that's good enough for me.
