What about making a Dalek a companion, in a bid to teach the Doctor that anyone, even his greatest enemies, can be reconstituted to being a worthwhile individual.
Hate is what motivates a Dalek. A Dalek who doesn't behave like a Dalek would hate himself even more.

Well, we've had good daleks already.

You undermine your own point - most of the characters you mention are that way because of the opportunity to travel with the Doctor. Amy was an independent, confident and competent girl before she met the Doctor, and continues to be so.
I can't imagine you would refer to River Song, Donna or Martha as a 'girl' and the fact that you do so about a married woman opens up everything I find wrong with the character. The fact that she was suddenly proficient in swordsmanship further suggests that she is just unrealistic.

I would have referred to Martha as a girl, yes. Possibly even moreso than Amy. I would have referred to Rose as such, especially. And I think you'll note that I referred to Amy being a girl before her travels with the Doctor, not when she was married.

She wasn't "suddenly proficient in swordsmanship". Her opponents where scared of getting the slightest scratch or scratching her for fear of summoning the Siren. Yet they still overpowered her.

I think you are grabbing straws now.

as long as they arent those fat-arsed-telltubby daleks then they're the originals in my book
quite right. They were all just tweaks of the basic model in my mind too. Until they said tubbybyebye.

I thought I would have a go at being a pedantic Doctor Who history expert for a bit. But I notice it can get on peoples nerves.

Btw, I always suspected the Ogrons stopped appearing because the Planet of the Apes franchise raised their eyebrows.

At the risk of doing my bit to turn this thread into a iDalek hate thread, it should be noted that the mysterious panel at the back of last years chosen exterminators was in the original design of 1963 (OK, a round panel was).

Yes and it commited suicide rather than stay tainted as it saw what was happening to it.

The first Dalek episode of New Who was brilliant. The Dalek was actually menacing, properly evil, utterly hellbent on complete genocide - until the final twist on the formula.

That said, from that point on ; what Russell T Davis did to the Daleks was utterly unforgivable. He neutered them. From being the most fearsome neo-nazi-esque race in all of existence... to being little more than prissy, petulant, wheely-bins - all of whom are easily foiled at the touch of a button.

Unless Moffat plans to make the Daleks truly nasty again - there's no point in them returning. Just let RTD's mistakes be forgotten (scour the world of all trace of Apple iDaleks) - and let the legend of the Daleks build till someone worthy takes over writing duties.

Oh I don't know, I think Moffat could pull it off. I don't want to see the Daleks again so soon as they became almost a joke during RTD's era partly due to the fact he brought them back so many darn times when really he didn't have to. He over used them is what I'm trying to say. Give Moffat credit - he did return the Daleks back to their true form (ie pure Dalek) and the storyline whilst wasn't brilliant was still pretty good and enjoyable. I reckon under Moffat's leadership the Daleks could and I emphasise could be good. I realise I have recently made a fair few anti-RTD posts and I don't hide the fact that I didn't like his scripts much a fair amount of time. I'm glad he brought the series back and he did write some good episodes, take Midnight I do like that. Just thought I would point that out before another accusation of trying to start an RTD vs Moffat debate again is aimed at me.

I only have one question - how do the daleks build their shells and ships?

They don't have hands and definately don't have opposable thumbs - have they enslaved another race?
Absolutely, they have enslaved cats, we all know what cats really want:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h6CcxJQq1x8

Being time travellers the Daleks artifically bypassed the normal course of feline evolution, thus giving the kitties what they want in exchange for forever helping the daleks!...

They could make a prequel to Genesis of the Daleks where we see Davros pre-accident. We could see him develop prototype Daleks, though they're not called that and the Doctor can't let on that he knows how their future development turns out.

I'd like to see a story where the 'New Dalek Paradigm' idea has gone badly wrong and the Daleks are embroiled in a civil war (iDaleks v 'old' Daleks). One side or the other (or maybe both) needs to find a way to trick, persuade or coerce the Doctor into helping them eliminate the other side. Could be an unusual dilemma for the Doctor; he'll want to destroy the Daleks, but in doing so would help the other Dalek faction...

No, not that one.

Much, much, earlier.

I call this idea sacrilege!

Stay there while I gather a mob and some pitchforks. I'll be right back!

Right, where do you want me? Shall I start incoherent angry shouting now or wait for the others?

the Daleks now have certain roles (drone, eternity dalek etc.) so that's probably where the production team will head. But it is stated that the Daleks will be given a break this series.
