Hi guys

I'm new to this forum (I spend most of my time in GD or Advice ) so please be nice!

I'm looking at getting sky talk and broadband, but can't seem to find a definitive answer to my question on their website

Do I need an active BT line to get sky talk, or are they now like virgin where they replace the phone line?

I HATE BT and don't want to reactivate the landline that I've just finished paying for - but want broadband....

Yes I will call sky to check, but at present I have a hangover and can't face a conversation

You can pay the line rental to SKY. If its not active I'm not to sure if open reach will charge for this to be reconnected.

Thanks, will give sky a call and see (the hangover is going slowly!) - fingers crossed I won't have to put any more of my money in Bt's hands...

Sky do not install their own network of phone lines. Unlike Virgin who can use their cable network to provide telephone and broadband services.

Effectively Sky "rent" the line off BT Openreach. They may or may not install their own kit in the exchange to handle the calls and broadband but the bit of copper wire from the exchange to the socket in your hallway or wherever will still travel over Openreach cables.

Openreach will also do any fault finding/repair work for Sky. And Sky will be billed for that. They may then pass all, some or none of that cost onto you depending on what work had to be done and how generous they are feeling.

So a bit of the money you hand over to Sky will trickle into Openreach's bank account.

I recently got a Sky Talk package having previously been a Virgin Media cable telephone customer. I can confirm you do not have to pay BT any line rental.

I didn't have an active BT line (having been a cable customer) and Sky activated the old copper line free of charge. I now merely pay £16.25 a month to Sky for line rental and a calling package.

I believe Sky do charge to activate a phoneline for existing customers though, I ordered the phone service at the same time as joining Sky for TV.

No, they don't. I've been with Sky for TV for umpteen years before I got Talk and BB...no activation fee. Unless you mean an installation charge...That's a different matter. And with that there doesn't seem to be a clear policy. I paid £19 for phone line installation. Others paid £29...AFAIK

If you look you will see I said you pay Sky and Sky pay BT, the line between the exchange and your house belongs to BT, Sky pay BT to rent it, then rent it to you...the point being that although you may think you are 'free' from BT, the fact is that Skys services come down BT's line and BT collect rent for that, its just they get it off Sky instead of you
