How much space does your DVD collection take up? Are you running out of space? Are they organised or cluttered?

The reason I'm asking all these questions is because mine is not organised at all. Running out of space all over the place and I'm looking for new ways to organise all my DVD's. How do you all manage your oversized DVD's collections?

First step, get yourself a DVD storage unit. Argos, Ikea etc do nice ones.

I don't buy many dvd's anymore .
Those I do buy are usually old tv shows that will not benefit from Bluray so they go into my huge cupboard reserved for tv series.

I have 3 large bookcases filled with dvd's all pretty unorganised .

But I am starting to run of out of space for Blurays as they are taking up a former dvd bookcase but as I stopped flogging the dvd versions of most of my Blurays I'm not getting extra space.

Most dvd's can be bought new for under a fiver so I will hang onto them until one they are a curiosity

Yea what I have is a couple of DVD storage containers that go as high up as i can reach. Then my box sets fill up the rest and cluttered DVD's all around wheere I have no more space.

I haven't made the transition to blurray yet as I have so many DVD's and no HD telly.

I'll just have to see where I can fit another container.

When I got to 500 or so, I realised I was never going to have space for them all, also, theres sod all resale value on them so, I ditched all the cases, and now they are stored in portable cases that hold 500 discs a piece. Such a storage saver I did the same with my music CDs. All snugly stored under the bed out of sight, nice and safe.

A few options based on the idea you have little living room space but enough attic space:

1) Take all your discs out of their cases and put them in DVD wallets. Something like this.
Make a numbered list of all your DVDs so you know which ones are in which wallet and roughly where within them. Put all the cases into boxes in the attic.

2) Rip all your movies to a digital format and then box all the discs up. As long as you don't share the files with anyone, nobody's going to come knocking on your door. Budget each harddrive costing around £50 and being able to store 100s of movies. (If you keep them as DVD folders, then about 200 per HDD, other file formats will let you store upto a 1,000 per HDD).

Pros of 2): Having your entire movie collection at your fingertips to watch on a TV. It's very fast to find a particular movie.

Cons: Cost of HDDs but mainly the time spent in ripping them.

I put my DVD's and Blu-rays in disc wallets.

The disc wallets that I have are organised as followes in to

1. Flms and Comerdy
2. Motor Racing and Cars
3. Blu-Rays
4. Recorded DVD's
5. Recorded DVD's
6. Playstation 3 Games
7. Wii Games
8. PC Discs

I keep all of my disc wallets in my cupborad.

I do keep some DVD's in there original case such as my R1 Dale Ernhart tin box set as well as my 2 Colchester United DVD's and Lap of the Gods 2 disc DVD.

I keep these in my cupborad.

I keep all my music DVD's and Blu-Rays in there original cases which are on CD/DVD racks/shelves that I have brought from Argos. I have 4, top 2 are for CD's and the other 2 are for music DVD's and DVD Audio Discs and Blu-Ray as well as a few recorded music DVD's.

I get my Disc wallets from Ebay brand new.

And here is the CD/DVD racks/shelves that I have brought from Argos.

I have several thousand . I dread to think how long it would take to copy them all.
Would all the menus , extras etc be there too?

Just shove em in a box, its not worth sorting them, like bothering with a vhs collection at this point, it is not worth the effort anymore. Just rent bluray.

Even if it took just 20 minutes to rip each disc without recoding, it would take 333 hours just for 1000 dvds alone, never mind the drive space, or that you should double the drive for backup to save yourself another 333 hour per 1000 dvd rip chore. In the end you will have spent hundreds of hours preserving a vhs type collection.

If you must, sort the damned discs by alphabetical order, and box them. It isn't that big a chore to get off your arse every 2 hours to fetch a disc. Mightt even keep you from dying from a blood clot in your legs.

Watch something like the sound of music or the wizard of oz on bluray and you see how pointless dvd is, it is night and day.

I was just curious.
I have no intention of copying mine to any drive .
I've had dvd's for 13 years using the same system as I have now so I'll make space as and when necessary .
Just means moving things around a bit

I have Sound of Music and Oz on Bluray along with a few hundred others - does not mean dvd is pointless, especially for the stacks of tv shows I have that were shot on tape so from that POV it would make Blurays pointless for that content

Get something like the Discgear, it saves an awful lot of space. http://www.qvcuk.com/ukqic/qvcapp.as...ms.item.564188

What about the 95% of dvd releases that are not out on Bluray?

Me too. I probably wasn't going to watch most of them again anyway. I've saved myself a lot of shelf space.

My individual DVDs like movies are cluttered and untidily stored but my boxsets are in a special place in my bedroom cupboard above my drawers of clothes.

do what I did with CD. Stick them all in the loft for a few years then realise that you don't miss them so you might as well flog the ones you are not interested in, now while they are still worth something.

My former wife once said to me when I used to buy Videos that I had a problem being a collector because some people believe it is an obsession.

I now have 1500 DVDs including more than 300 which I have copied from TV using editing suites on my DVD recorders (I have two) to delete the adverts.

Does this mean I have an obsession or is it just a hobby which I think it is since I have been a movie and telly buff since the 1950s.

What do other collectors think?

One more thing, all my DVDs are in alphabetical order, and the recorded discs are in numbered boxes and cataloged so I know where they are. That is being organised.

I'm about to move into my first owned property.

I currently have shelf after shelf of DVDs just gathering dust.

I want my new place to be clean, tidy and minimalist.

I had a look at one of those 'We buy your DVDs' companies. They are offering just 30p per DVD.

Is 30p the most I can expect or could I get more on Ebay?

ebay is good for selling

and Gumtree is good for buying ! I just wonder how much is stolen ? Plus you can narrow down to your area. I got a cracking deal on two brand new Sky boxes .

with films really at £ 3 per DVD now and Blu Ray falling , maybe a car boot sale ?

I recently had to move into a much smaller place (old house being renovated) and didnt want to take several boxes of dvds with me. Got myself a 400 CD wallet, put the disks and info into that. Saves tonnes of space, ripped the disks I want to onto a NAS and use DLNA capable TV to view them

I have around 6000 dvds and around 100 blu-ray. I'm reluctant to buy films on DVD now. I do buy a lot of older films and foreign films from labels like Masters Of Cinema, Second Run, Soda and BFI. These are either released on DVD only or Blu-Ray/DVD combis

I am having some custom made shelves built by a family member so I can organise my collection better. At the moment I have two rows on each shelf, so I can't see the ones behind. With the new shelves I can single stack them on each shelf. It's going to take a while to put them on the new shelves, but it will look so good when it is all done over the next couple of weeks
