Rory and Amy- Curse of the Black Spot

Just a teensy complaint, and PLEASE don't jump down my throat for it people, but did anyone else feel like the whole 'Ooh, look, we made Amy nice to Rory' thing was just

1) Spinning out the Rory/Amy dynamic. Again.
2) Patronising our desire for her to treat him nicely?

I want to qualify these arguments a bit, so:

1) I know on this one there are a few theories about Rory being more important, and the whole Big Bang took place on the wedding day, so maybe it is important, but all the same- how many times can Rory die as a plot device?

2) I know, I know, I'm complaining about something I actively want- but it's like a man giving you flowers because you asked him to!

Just a final note- nice to see Rory with his shirt off!

Perhaps Amy just didn't want her husband to die.

Perhaps you're complaining about the exact opposite thing you were complaining about last time.

"Amy hates Rory."

This week:

"Amy loves Rory to much!"

So you moan because a bloke doesn't give you flowers.

So he gives you flowers.

So you moan because he's given you flowers?

I begin to see why some people are never satisfied whatever happens in Doctor Who.

It's not that at all- it just feels a little one plus one equals two- Amy is mean to Rory, and he has to die (or nearly) to make her a bit nicer- as well as an unorignal plot device, it's a bit melodramatic. Howabout her just generally being a bit kinder, a more subtle development than just 'oh my husbands dying, I love him!'? This was used effectviely at the beginning of the episode when she was getting pissy about him going after the siren- nicely done!

I think it was a good part of the plot of this episode- but it's part of the plot of an awful lot of episodes now, it's in danger of becoming Rose.

I love my boyfriend and Doctor Who to pieces- doesn't mean I can't find fault with either! (bf used as an example here, nowt to do with the flower question!)

Amy always shows her love for Rory. She just doesn't always do it by crying and worrying about him. All those times she calls him stupid and moron are actually how she shows affection.

Has no-one else ever known someone who shows their affection through friendly insults? Not everyone emotes openly all the time. It's far more realistic than the Dawson's Creek approach of "if their hearts could talk, this is what they'd say."

Rory and Amy are very different chartacters. He is clearly someone who wears his heart on his sleeve. She is someone who is not so open about showing her feelings, but still has them. She only ever opens up totally when the situation is grim. That's not an uncommon character trait (I'm quite like that myself, so perhaps that's why I identify with Amy).

Personally, I think its more interesting to keep them as having very different characters. It's more interesting and it makes their interactions more dynamic.

My mother jokes that me and my OH are Amy and Rory.

I agree with everything you have said her. I too share that character trait

Rory takes Amy's insults as affectionate. All the time. The times when she tells him to shut up the loudest are the time are the times he's most likely to give her a big hug, because he knows what she's really thinking.

When we see her express what some here would call 'genuine' emotion - it's not any more genuine, it's just with the guard down.

Quote:
“Amy: Do you feel like you've forgotten something really important? Do you feel like there's a... great, big thing in your head, and you feel like you should remember it, but you can't?
Rory: Yep.
Amy: Are you just saying "yes" because you're scared of me?
Rory: Yep.
Amy: Love you.
Rory: Yep. I mean, I love you, too.”

Does Amy really love Rory?

Well, let's see.

She meets a man who she clearly finds sufficiently attractive to try very obviously to seduce and who takes her on amazing adventures in time and space.

So she can either choose to continue to do that or get married and settle down with Rory.

And she chooses Rory.

Decide for yourself.
