I love Doctor Who and will watch it regardless of how the story develops, however I am getting a little tired of the is he/she, isn't he/she dead concept over the last 2 series.

Yes.

It's a very overused plot device.

I never believed for an instant that Rory would not return at some point (original death in crack in time arc).

And if Amy or the Doctor were going to die I can't believe that the news that the actor/actress had left the series would not have got out.

Plus, if the doctor dies - really dies - the one and only instance of him dies forever - then the franchise ends.

I liked the old way of putting them in peril, at the brink of being killed etc, rather than actually pretending they are dead then brining them back.

No. Every series has featured episodes where a companion is, or is believed to be, near death. It's kind of essential to the premise.

Remember how often a key character was killed off in the classic series and what a shock it was when it happend.

Rather than thinking its lazy writing I find it amusing.

I can definitely see the Doctor making a throwaway line in the future

"Rory, try not to die this time"

I am more annoyed by things like the "cliffhanger" in Family of Blood/Human nature.
Me at the end of episode one: "Ooh the doctor has to make a choice"
Me at the start of episode two:"oh, they all escaped"

...not forgetting River Song being on a completely different timeline to everyone else. She was also killed in Silence in the Library.

Agreed, the peril is thrilling but to always have the full blown death not that interesting, it is now becoming almost comical. My 7 year old son summed it up on Saturday when he blurted out "OMG they killed Rory", which made me laugh as he has never seen South Park, just heard the phrase.

You'll notice that that only happened once - with Rory.

I don't think 'faked death' really counts as a timey-wimey plot device, do you? And Amy was only 'almost dead' in The Big Bang - the Pandorica put her in suspended animation until she could be revived.

Also, when you say fake death, it still invokes the same feelings when it "happens", regardless of its intent.

Not sure what you mean here - do you mean in Amy's Choice? Because in that episode the one rule of the game was declared up-front - that they had to 'die' in the fake reality to wake up in the real one.

Moff likes to kill people and then roll it all back, nobody is safe(ly dead) when he's writing a story. It first happened as soon as 'Everybody lives' (The Doctor Dances?) It makes an impact first five or how many times, but then people become jaded and know they just have to sit it out and everything will be OK in the end.

I really do have a feeling that at the end of this story arch all the near deaths and deaths will have some impact especially rorys

We were also lead to believe the Doctor from the immediate future was dead in The Big Bang, but that turned out to be not so either - so there's another one. We were also briefly implied that Rory had melted whilst protecting the box in the Blitz!

Call me stupid but I don't remember any one except the Doctor dieing in The Impossible Astronaut so by my reconing Amy has only died once, Rory has only died twice (Cold Blood and The Curse of the Black Spot, I don't count Amy choice as it was all a dream and in some ways can forgive them for that because it was a device used to help Amy realise it was Rory and not the Doctor she wanted) so I don't see why every one is complaining - sure the whole coming back from the dead thing is getting a bit lame but I am sure there is going to be a fair explaination of some sort and even if not as long as they leave the death's only to come backs here and don't do it again (apart from the Doctor as he technically hasn't been brought back yet even though we all know that he must do since it would be stupid for them to end the series when they can carry it on - particularly as they make millions every year from it as I have already pointed out.

Don't forget that the 'dead' doctor is 200 years older so the BBC have until 2311 to work out a plot device to keep the franchise alive.

Okay, this one is endlessly debatable - but as I said before, there was enough activity for her to be placed in suspended animation in the Pandorica until it could use the DNA sample from Amelia to revive her. She wasn't completely gone.

But to the pertinent point, she was dead. She had been shot and killed by Auton Rory. The Doctor even confirmed she was dead.

The Pandorica was able to regenerate her because she was so recently killed. Plot device!

As far as I am concerned she was killed. there is nothing anyone can say that can change that for me.

No, I wasn't aware of any previous debate, and I certainly didn't mean anything bad. I mean "Okay, it's debatable" in the sense of "Fair enough, it could be argued either way". And that's exactly what the Doctor does!

Forgive me if this has been discussed before as I'm new to this forum, but along with all the 'bringing back from the dead' and 'rolling back time' plot twists and turns, the other device I find hard to take is 'remembering' people back into existence, in the way that Amy remembers the Doctor on her wedding day. This seems a weak way of resolving the plot, IMO.

I like the twists and turns of the Moffat era because I enjoy a good mystery, but I think some of the plot complexities are there just because they're 'clever' and don't add depth to the characters. Rather than Rory dying or nearly dying every episode, why not explore his character in its own right, rather than him merely being Amy's sidekick? Hopefully this will happen in future episodes.

Amy's 'death' and resurrection was a foreshadowing of the Pandorica doing the same to the rest of the universe - she was 'mostly' dead, with enough hanging on that the restoration field could use a living sample to restore what was missing. Similarly, the universe was 'mostly' dead, with only the Earth remaining - all it needed was the preserved particles of the 'living' universe, pre-destruction, as well as widening the field a bit.

So, it's kind of a plot point that she wasn't completely dead. But that's dependent on your definition of 'dead', which is why it could be argued either way.

Logically, maybe. Scientifically, definitely. But thematically, it fitted with the ideas that had already been at the forefront of the story.
