How many people here remember the junk yard?
How many forumites remember sitting down on that fateful Saturday 47 years ago and watching the young girl (although she seemed almost a grown up to me, at the time) being followed by her teachers into the old scrap yard.
I'll bet none of you thought that you'd still be watching the programme nearly half a century later. Can anyone remember any of the lines? The only one I can remember is the Doctor saying something about money and, after the two teachers looked confused telling them "I forgot you haven't gone decimal yet" (or words to that effect). Prescient or what? |

I don't remember because I'm not quite old enough, almost though. But is this the same junkyard talked about where the doctor and his granddaughter Susan lived for a while?

I'm not old enough to have seen the first episode on transmission but having watched it on Video/DVD, it is a cracking good episode and the decimal currency line in hindsight is one seriously magical moment!

Susan's reference to decimalisation was not a wild stab in the dark for 1963. The Halsbury Committee had been set up in 1961, and both main parties considered decimalisation to be an essential modernising step. In practice the Committee set up by a Conservative government reported to a subsequent Labour government, which then made plans that were finally put into operation by the Conservative government that succeeded it. Fiction is fast, public policy is slow in the making.

I remember the junk yard, but that's because I only watched it a couple of months ago! I'm from that sad generation which had no doctor who in their childhood (I was nearly 16 when it came back).

I remember it too, I was only about 7 though. I watched it avidly after that but always thought they would end up back at the junk yard and all go home. Guess I misunderstood the concept lol!

There is a great documentry on the edge of destruction dvd extras, all about how the first episode came about, from the casting, finding a studio, budgeting and the skill and inititive to create the story and music. Its amazing such a iconic programme was made just to fill 25 minutes before grandstand came on.

I remember the first doctor so I suspect I would have watched the first episode. I cannot remember the episode though.

![]() I can't tell how much I remember from the first viewing as I've seen it a few times since. I know I thought it was intriguing and exciting. |
