Care of Xbox. Paranoid...or am I?

Having just been treated to the 360 with 250gb for my birthday after saving up and wanting one for about 3 years I am just a little bit concerned that I do all I can to prevent wear and tear and to optimise its chances of living to a ripe old age. I now know to install the games I want to play to cut down no disk drive wear.

I have noticed that it still gets quite warm while playing so at the moment I am trying to make surte that after a couple of hours I give it a break and let it cool down naturally to room temp again. Am I being overly precious about it and a bit paranoid? Will this do any good at all or is it completely unnescessary. The manual says that if it gets too hot that it will automatically cut out anyway to protect itself and not come back on until it is cool.

Is there anything that I can do in the general day to day playing that will help prevent ring o' death and am I being over cautious?

the new model is quieter and cooler

any map packs you buy etc can be downloaded time and again to your Online gamer tag

anything runs hot , laptops etc

stop worrying and enjoy it

Just make sure nothing blocks the vents so the air can circulate.

I was the same when I got mine, made sure it was well ventilated and dust free however I still got the E65 error and had to send it away. All you can do is cross your fingers.

my advice would be to keep it covered when off with a dust sheet + keep it off the floor and clean every week or two.

If you must have it on the floor - the upright position gives better cooling + you must keep it off the carpet. I have built a little black stand with two bits of wood stuck to some plywood - all painted.

I dont know of any of the newer 'black' xboxes getting RROD at all!

The new Xbox's can't technically get a Red Ring of Death. More a Red Dot of Death. It seems like Microsoft were trying to distant themselves from the RROD for an absolute age.

The newer Xbox's do run cooler, but the air that comes out is actually hotter. That's all to do with the CPU and GPU being on the same chip and covered by a ma-hoo-sive fan.

Just make sure the Xbox has enough room for ventilation and you're fine

In a few years youll be able to get one for almost nothing.

Just don't block the vents.

I have an elite and a slim, they both get, depending on my mood, and my fellas kids staying over, anything from light use daily to full 10 hour marathons. Never ( touch wood) had an issue. I do keep them well ventilated, and although the "spare" elite gets a bit neglected I am uber fussy about dusting. More to do with my OCD like hatred of dust on my tv set up and shiny Slim , than anything else!
