I didn't like the whole family scenes at the table because I found the three kids (especially the girl) totally annoying and utterly pointless. I did however like the family aspect that would often take place in the kitchen between just two or three characters (usually Selleck and one of his kids).
That said, I heard they bumped Amy Carlson from guest to regular for Season 2. If this is true, wouldn't that lend to more family stuff, since she is not in law enforcement?
Her role this season, outside of the odd episode where she was pivotal, seemed to be nothing more than cooking the chicken and telling the two brats to behave. By giving her a more prominent role would suggest more family/personal stuff rather than less.
My only gripe with the show is the lack of realism that most cases manage to involve the whole family. If anything, it's surely less likely that the other family members would get involved once one family member has the initial lead on a case.
