Okay, if BBCW is distributing then Orphan Black will only be sold to a private broadcaster in the UK, since the point of BBCW is to funnel profits to the BBC and it rather undermines that purpose if it gives/sells shows to the BBC instead of selling them to make money to give to the BBC.

Shows get picked up on the basis of how recognisable they are. If I asked somebody on the street what these people have been in, they'd probably struggle, and that's what networks care about.
Maybe as a TV fan you know who they all are, but I'm a TV fan and (aside from Parenthood) I'd struggle to name a show any of them had been in...

It has more recognisable stars than many shows that UK networks buy and certainly many stars that people who would watch a US show would know
I mean Bonnie Bedelia is Holly McClane from Die Hard.
And the likes of Peter Krause, Lauren Graham and Sam Jaeger are regulars on TV shows. Mae Whitman has not only stared in a number of cult TV shows but also has been in a a number of Hollywood movies.Erika Christensen has done a number of movies including winning awards for her role in Traffic as well as a fair few TV appearances and Dax Shepard has also stared in a number of movies.
And that's just the Braveman Clan. The additional charachters have include regular TV stars such as Jason Ritter, Minka Kelly, Ray Romano, Matt Lauria as well as one one of the Baldwin brothers in William.

I don't think there are that many shows with less recognisable names that haven't flopped. Castle, How I Met Your Mother (though that struggled for a long time), 2 Broke Girls, The Big Bang Theory [Depending on how you define success Archer and Suburgatory may also make the list]
You just listed a load of people I've never heard of, William Baldwin is the only instantly recognisable name on that list.

TBH, the only reason I've heard of him is that he's married to Kristen Bell and his name came up a lot recently due to the Kickstarter project for the Veronica Mars film, which Kristen Bell was a prime mover for and also star of the TV series and forthcoming film.

Seriously you are listing How I Met Your Mother as having an unknown cast when It stars Alison Haniggan (7 Seasons of Buffy, a number of episodes of Veronica Mars and the American Pie movies), Neil Patrick Harris (Star of Doogie Howser MD TV Show and major roles in the Harold and Kumar movies and in the first Starship Troopers movie. Also award winning stage performer). Even Jason Segel had stared in Judd Apatows two critically claimed TV shows (Freaks & Geeks and Undecelared)
And I can name many shows with casts who have a weaker uk reconignition than Parenthood when it was picked up by a UK network

Thanks for clarifying. Given the shows themes it looks like something to interest Watch or SciFi but obviously no takers.
What gets picked up is shows the channels here think will get them an audience. The crime shows and procedurals always do well as there is a big audience for those shows in the UK. Comedy doesn't travel as well because of cultural differences unless it is really mainstream like Friends. Only a very few channels like E4 will take a risk with US comedy.
There are some recent shows here I am surprised haven't been picked up but they are mainly drama. Shows like The Firm which I saw on Swedish TV but has never been picked up in the UK or The Transporter which also got shown in most of Europe but not UK. Okay both cancelled after one season in the US but loads of one season shows have been shown here or bought later.

I agree with one reviewer who said they threw to much at us too soon, and that it was difficult to identify with the main character.

Red Widow was fine, but this seems like a good place to end it. They packed a lot in, but that is a GOOD thing given that it was never going to get past its initial episode order. It practically works as a self-contained mini-series.

I think none of the stars of HIMYM were instantly recognisable big name stars, though NPH was probably borderline (definitely is now). It also bounced around 3 different networks before finding a long lasting UK home.
Most of those weren't a success in the UK or had big name producers. Some of them even had big name cast members. I've updated your list with reasons they were probably acquired (or why they shouldn't count).
And my comments were more the fact it was a little known non-feel good comedy drama about a family with a disabled child, with moderately well known stars and an actor who is now famous for being blindly conservative, rather than his career, all combined to mean your lucky anyone picked it up.
I've just started watching Law and Order:LA on Universal and I was sad to read that it had been binned after only 22 episodes. I've really been enjoying it. Alfred Molina and Terrence Howard, in particular, are good in it.
