I will always argue to value of the demo rating over the audience total, but you have got me thinking...
If you’re talking about the general success of a programme then maybe the total audience is the best measurement. After all, it translates to how many people are actually watching a programme, which translates to the programmes actual popularity.
If you’re talking about the success of a programme in terms of to the network it airs on, then obviously the demo rating is the best measurement as it translates to how profitably the programme is for them. And the end of the day, they are a business and their aim is to make as much money as possible, not entertain as many people as possible.
So if you’re trying to tell someone, a random person on the street, how successful a new television programme is maybe you should use the audience total as a measure. If you’re trying to tell someone in the television industry, use the demo rating.
