Has The Carrie Diaries always been paired with ANTM or is this new this season?

I'm looking forward to seeing the trailers for Reign and The Tomorrow People as they were two of the pilots that I thought sounded good on paper. They're in tough timeslots - Reign is up against Glee, Grey's Anatomy and Two and a Half Men while The Tomorrow People is up against Modern Family, Criminal Minds and The X Factor but hopefully they'll both do well when DVR and online viewings are factored in.

Nikita confirmed to end as well - hardly surprising considering they only ordered 6 episodes.

Can't complain about only having six episodes for Nikita's final season. Us fans were lucky we even got past the second season as it was never a ratings winner.n

It's slightly the same with Le Femme Nikita. That was cancelled after season 4 but with a fan campaign, it got a fifth season of 6 episodes.

Say what you want about The CW they do like to make sure their shows get proper endings, the ones that make it past the first season that is. Still haven't watched Season 2 of Nikita so will have to catch up, or wait until to it's all out on dvd and watch it all at once.

Have to agree with all you say. Just imagine that if it ended after this season, would not of felt right, would of been rushed towards the end. This means we get a quality conclusion, which I have no doubt we will get. Its a shame it did not get better ratings, it deserved so much more.

And at least a fan campaign isnt need this time, I think we were lucky to get what we got and for the writers to give us something we deserve, and everyone that is involved in the show.

Perhaps this is a new "thing" for US networks?. Renew a show for a 6 episode final "mini" series just to wrap things up?

I don't agree with people behind the scenes deciding for the public whether we would hate a pilot or not

They should air all the pilots they do and the ones with the best ratings, get turned into a full series
Because it's us people that keep the shows on air

They do that here.

I suspect its more a combination of the following rather than a new trend of wanting to give shows a proper ending

1) Viewing figures for repeats in the last couple of years have crashed. The difference in the Ad revenue now between a new epsiode and a repeat is getting to a point where it starts making sense run new episodes as much as possible rather than a repeat. This is also why we are seeing more and more limited run shows commisioned so they don't have to show as many repeats

2) Despite the myth about needing 100 episodes for syndication the fact that Animation is often from sold in orders of 64 episode tell us that 64 is the magic number. Nikita is actually over that but there's some episodes that won't be suitable for syndication so it needs a few more to offset that as the buyer needs 64 episode they can show at any time in the day. In Warehouse 13’s case they will be on 58 episods at the end of the Season 4 so the 6 episods of season 5 takes them to 64 exactly.

3) Contrats. The shows that have generally been given the shortened final season have been shows where that final season will be its 5th. Unless its a major hit the networks know it won't give it a 6th because union agreements mean that a season 6 results in a forced salery and royalties increase for both cast and crew.Additionally season 5 is where unless its officially canceled the talent will be discussing new deals so a shorted final season presents that being an issue.

I also suspect that maybe it doesn't count as a season as far as their contacts are as I suspect it may not be consisted a season.

If you look at Warehuse 13 for example It may officially be season 5 but its not. Season 4 is the longest season to date, in fact its almost double seasons 1-3 so their union may argue it two seasons. This would make the last season 6 and trigger various inceases.

I six episode second season to wrap things up would have been good.

Fringe really started this by getting a short run season to end the story. Nine times out of ten the ratings would previously have dictated it ending in the middle of the plot.

This is the only sensible way to get people to give 'risky' shows a chance and so watch. After being burned by high concept dramas that never got a resolution.

Though I suppose some shows will never qualify if they totally bomb. But it is the right thing to do for any series that makes it past season one and cannot be given enough warning on its fate to structure a proper ending.

Bit like how they finally wrapped up Farscape with the mini series. No way could that have been left forever on such a cliffhanger as the last series did. So I guess FS really trailblazed this idea.

It could have made shows like Lost and Heroes better by having a focused earlier ending.

Quite a few shows have been saved in different ways

Alien Nation was wrapped up with 5 films
Jericho was given a 7 episode second season
The pretender was given two films
Sliders was saved by syfy with a two season pick up but actually did the show more harm than good as not all cast came back

For broadcast networks, the magic number for syndication is 88 but I imagine 100 is preferable for sitcoms, animation is 65 although many have been syndicated with less and some with a lot more.
