I dont know to be honest. But it has a sound of Fox's Second Chance to me, although that may just be me and my odd thoughts

Oh no I'll give it a full 13 episodes cut of at the knee with a 0.5, never getting higher than a 0.9

Not from what I've read of the show's plot.

Although I'm not sure if you are thinking about 'Transcendence' or the 2013 film of the same name as the show.

Hmm... I haven't had time to watch it yet but I'm not optimistic - though I'll try to watch tonight with an open mind. I actually liked the BBC4 version (not as much as the books obviously or the radio version) the only problem was that it was hampered by a tiny production budget.

Without spoiling it of course, does Dirk gently have a different case in each episode or is one long case throughout the eight episodes?

Just finished watching the first episode and it does look as if there are some ongoing (or "interconnected") elements.

Despite my low expectations I really enjoyed the opener. I see that there are lots of complaints on IMDB and elsewhere that it is nothing like the books but surely that's the whole point of this version - to do something totally different but which is still in the spirit of DNA's original work.

Yep it's one long arc, each episode moving a step on with enough of a resolution to be satisfying as a "bite". Apologies for the vague language but I want to be completly spoiler free

There's a little casual reference that sets the time line as after the books (and though clearly not within the shows cannon) after the SM stories if you will. There's also a back story - completely new to the books which may well annoy purists - though to me I think Douglas would have approved of it.

There are a few additional characters that are real standouts as well. I'm surprisingly invested in it for something so light and well, silly. I expected to be "American Torchwood" annoyed. Instead I'm "American Office" happy

Slightly disappointed it is one case. I am sucker for a case of the week type show and i assumed this was it, but with one main arc weaved through. Oh well. That's how television is these days. I'll be checking it out over xmas. I still have Stranger Things and The Crown still to watch on netflix.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm not sure The Crown is my kind of thing but Stranger Things is the best TV I've seen in 2016. For Xmas, I have Westworld, Black Mirror and a few Scandi-noir shows saved up.

I'm enjoying this series as well. I'm especially pleased that there is going to be a second season.

Up to episode 5 now and still enjoying the series. It doesn't really make any sense at all but Dirk Gently was never supposed to anyway. Douglas Adams is one of my favourite writers of all time and I'm always wary when anyone tries to take on his work but I'm happy that this does him justice.

Just to add on my post about Still Star-Crossed and the episode count. It may well have its name changed as well. Nothing confirmed but it is being considered.

What Scandi-noir are you planning on watching?

I saw the first season of The Killing and thought it was brilliant - however struggled to get into the second and haven't got round to watching it past the 3 episode. Loved the first two seasons of the Bridge but struggled again with the third. Borgen was brilliant throughout.

I watched 'Occupied' on Netflix recently - not quite up to the standard of the above but very enjoyable.

I do miss series with stand alone episodes but times have changed. Even south park now does one long story over ten episodes....although it has worked.

Apparently most of the actors have moved on so I'd assume not unless it's gonna be another group of new characters which I can't see happening. I know goran višnjić is now in timeless, not sure what others are in. For me the change in season 3 was too much. It also seemed to change in the content ie more adult, Not sure why though.

Pretty sure that idea is over now that "The End of Serialization As We Know It" has aired

South Park messed up because the story arc was built around the assumption that Clinton would win the election. They had to do so much rejigging around it that most of the story lines were either abandoned or completely twisted.

BTW - I read an article that said that Trump is struggling to find someone to perform at his inauguration. The (mischievous) reporter covering the story asked Rick Astley if he would do it and he replied "it depends how big the cheque is". Are we all about to be Rick-Rolled?
