I don't think it is looking good for law and order:svu. Which is a shame because I love that show..... But with Dick Wolfs other show being picked up it may be at the cost of SVU. Sad times

Fox now for most new shows only do 12 episode half seasons, I guess less of a gamble if cancelled quickly. They can also say they are limited run mini series some then get renewed like Fox did with The Following last year. Even CBS now do this half season limited run with Hostages and Intelligence. As they say limited runs they can claim not cancelled if not renewed even though they must be hoping the audience allows a renewal. |

They said it was contracts and salary demands for why it was not renewed when the bulk of NBC's shows were recently renewed. Has a higher demo rating than many of those renewed so must be down to money.

I read a report that Dick Wolf was refusing to take a financial cut for the series that NBC wanted to ensure renewal. I think Mariska is also due a contract renegotiation and i can't imagine she would be very cheap. Seems that the costs have gone too high for the figures it gets (not as good as its hey day) it is a shame though because it an easy watch and the episodes are pretty much always good. However 15 years is a very long time and if it goes it can't be said that they didn't give it a good run!
They also like many long running shows have heaps of episodes for syndication so adding another season probably makes no difference to the shows resale value plus it's mainly story of the week focus means as with shows like CSI they can use random episodes for repeats. Mariska's salary must be the only expensive one left as the new cast members who have joined in recent years will be on significantly less money. |

That is a very interesting report!
If The Mentalist does ultimately end, I at least hope they can film a proper ending. |

Agreed. I've been recording "Believe" to give it a go, but if it's almost certain to be cancelled then I might delete it now.

They already had a proper ending, everything since has been a bonus.
At least let Jane go off into the sunset and live happily ever after or something like that. |

Interesting note from neogaf: Quote:
A few things here:
Syndication is generally bullshit when it comes to renewal or cancellation for more serialized fare. I'm not going to strip Revolution down and put it on a 5 nights a week. The most important thing for serialized fare now is Netflix deals. WB has a very, very lucrative deal with Netflix for shows like Revolution (like ABCS does for Revenge, OUAT, Scandal, etc) that make oodles of money. The most important part of a Netflix deal is a show that is good for binging and comes to a conclusion. Revenge could conceivably end this season and have a tight ending that would be perfect for binging, but the more episodes the better. Another thing: Sony and ABCS actually got Happy Endings down to a cable level budget. Their biggest two potential buyers (USA and TBS) passed because USA had its own two shows they wanted to promote (and hey, you go Sirens, you big hit you) and TBS had just bought American Dad and Cougar Town and doesn't want to be the net that just poaches the dead from broadcast. At the end of the day, it was probably a poor decision on USA's part, but there was a very clear plan there for a season 4 budget if someone would air it. It also wouldn't have mattered if Happy Endings had 57 episodes of 66 in terms of getting canceled by ABC. As a rule, ABC is generally not open to renewing shows based off of lowered price points. Syndication matters less and less, since so few shows are able to make an impact in syndication. Low rated shows aren't suddenly going to be hits in reruns (see: Community, 30 Rock, both of which have done abominably in syndication). |

Almost Human will be starting on Watch on May 6th. Are we likely to know by then whether it's been cancelled or renewed??

I know what you mean, but I still don't want the show to just finish.

I thought syndication played a vital part in potential renewals or cancellations. Take The Mentalist for example. Not owned CBS, so unlike shows like The Good Wife, they do not make money in off-network syndication deals. Warner Bros are the ones making the top dollar. But I am no expert.

Depends on the show I guess. It might help shows like Scandal, Big Bang etc but not "niche" shows like Community, etc

The ownership is also an issue, I remember ABC picking up SCRUBS for a few seasons (an ABC studios production) when NBC cancelled it but then again last year they axed both happy Endings and Body of proof. Both of which had ABC Studios involvement. I think another reason The Good Wife survives is that unlike the rest of the shows on CBS it does well critically and generally gets a lot of award nominations which is important to some execs. Awards were the only reason Arrested Development got to a third season. Comedy syndication is very interesting, as pointed out by TamiBeckett above some networks have been badly burnt in the syndication market in the last few years. Buying up any comedy they could get their hands on. TBS paid a ridiculous amount for two broke girls after its first season and before its ratings on CBS took a serious fall. |

Believe is very good and I personally would say you'd be stupid to miss it just cause it hasn't been renewed. Really annoys me when people miss out on good stuff just cause it didn't get renewed.
