Another show for Julie Benz, straight off the back of No Ordinary Family being cancelled.

With four years of Dexter, a stint on Desperate, a year on No Ordinary Family and now A Gifted Man, she certainly has no problems getting work.

Don't forget about Angel before that.

True, but I'm sure Sky bought the broadcast rights to TCC in advance of its' U.S. airing, so were already committed to showing it either way.

Not forgetting that probably the majority of Sky's customers won't know that its been cancelled.

If only that were true as the gits have just cancelled Hellcats and I really enjoyed that.

I would say, from the series finale, that the cancellation wasn't necessarily expected either as it left all sorts of things up in the air.

Nor should she, the woman's awesome!


To be fair, The CW's probably better than most in that regard. OTH 9 seasons, Smallville 10 seasons, Supernatural 7 seasons (so far), TVD going into it's 3rd season etc. Even shows like 90210 and Gossip Girl which would have been killed years ago by any other network, have survived.

That's what makes it worse though, specially as Hellcats had got pretty good viewing figures and ratings for a show on cable etc.

The problem was that The CW had already picked up three new shows for next season; Ringer, The Secret Circle and Hart of Dixie, whilst only Life Unexpected had been cancelled, and Smallville was ending, hence, another show was going to have to be cut.

You look at the ratings and you'd have thought that 90210 or Gossip Girl would have been odds-on, but they complement each other well. They both cater to the young female demo that The CW loves.

After that it was down to OTH and Hellcats. Don't really know why they picked one over the other there though.

Oh I know the logic etc behind it, just seems stupid when they'd "finalised" OTH in the series finale and pretty much wrapped everything up and then Hellcats had an epic finale and everything left all up in the air.

Of the two shows it made more sense, to me, to continue with the new show which was picking up speed and getting some good reviews than to add another season to a show that's really on its last legs.

No idea for sure, but I'd have thought that Hellcats would be cheaper to make as well, given that OTH's into its ninth year now.

Perhaps they just figured that it was a safer bet than Hellcats.

Who knows, 'tis a shame, but in truth which ever one of them came back was probably going to end next year one way or another.

Part of the reason for the OTH renewal over Hellcats has been network strategy. With Smallville now over, OTH is the network's most veteran series, and keeping it on the schedule is a wise marketing decision in order to create an illusion of network stability and help the CW brand rmain potent. Supernatural is the next longest running series on the network, and together they will provide the tentholes for the network to build their schedule around.

If OTH were cancelled only Supernatural; woud remain as a recognisable brand in the schedule. The more "familiar faces" the net can keep year after year, the easier it is to have a "continuity" in terms of network branding and lso the illusion of hand overs as the years progress.

If a network presents an all new grid with no recognisable shows in it (because they are all new) they could run the risk of alienating viewers, si it is important to keep some familiarity in any grid. The interesting thing will be next year. OTH will probs have a shortened season, and Im wondering if they can keep Supernatural going for another year. But then again, by the end of next year, a show like 90210 which is a strong recognisable CW brand now, will only have strengthened more to perhaps work as the CWs centrepiece for the next year's grid.

I think at the moment, the recognisable brands for the CW would be Supernatural and TVD. After that you're looking at the teen female crowd, but that's already well represented by the GG/90210 combo. I guess OTH bolsters that, but IMO it doesn't really need it. It'll be interesting to see what its running mate is next season, I suspect that it might be Hart of Dixie, as nothing else really seems to fit, unless they break up the 90210/GG combo, which I can't see them doing.

Is anyone else surprised that CBS have re-newed Rules of Engagement only to put it on Saturday nights, a night when networks don’t even broadcast new content; it’s usually full of reruns, specials and movies.

I don’t watch the programme; I just thought it was an odd move. It’s the only new programme airing on Saturdays on any of the major networks. The best possibility as to why that I’ve heard is that this is to push the number of episodes into a decent number so that they can sell the programme into syndication.

On a good point. Just checked all them new series you stated. Out on Wiki. Terra Nova looks good, Alcatraz thats going to be crazy. Not quite sure about Once Upon A Time & The Secret Circle to far out MAN. Grimm looks ok. Awake thats be good me tinks

On a even brighter point. Never watched or heard of The Event or The Cape so got to watch them.

If you watch The Event stick with it. It was slow, confusing and missable at the start but after the mid way revamp became fairly watchable. By then way too late to save it, of course.

While it was entertaining at times, it felt like The Event did most of it's plotlines for the sole purpose of shock value rather than for the good of the story/characters/etc. We get it, you want this to be as surprising as Lost. Newsflash: Lost actually did it to further along the story (well, til a certain point).

Just hope that Alcatraz isn't next season's Flash Forward/The Event......

Glad Happy Endings is renewed, one of the few new comedies that has potential. All the characters are likable and its well written for the most part.

Disappointed Mr Sunshine is cancelled, thought it was fairly decent and not given a big enough chance by ABC,

Don't forget Raising Hope in the good new comedies.

And yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with Mr. Sunshine as well, thought it started out slow but was much better towards the end. Also disappointed about Mad Love, also thought that had potential.

Oh dear, that's another series Andrea Anders has been in that has been cancelled early.

Someone somewhere must be able to keep producing Lie To Me - it's a brilliant show, much more than just characters and sensationalist storylines. I can't think of any other TV Show I've seen that's like it with such talented actors and writers.

Why can't they make up another category called indefinite/indeterminate hiatus (so they can fill the slots of any pickups that grossly underperform cos they were wrong to pick them), roll out a website that can be used to support and build fanbases, include content, forums and video excerpts exclusive to the website and the top 50% of the shows are up for grabs to the winning networks to continue producing? This means that all the fans from across the world who are only just finding out about the cancellations get a chance to support their favourite.

I don't see why this 'list' should be the last word. I thought we were the ones watching?

Showtime has cancelled United States of Tara. I've still not watched it, have wanted to for a long time, was hoping a channel would pick it up over here. Now that isn't going to happen, guess I'm going to have to seek it out, shame it's taken it's cancellation for me to finally do that.
