Of course every contract is different, but I didn’t think it was standard for an actor/actress to have to commit to the programme being a priority for 12 months of the year, just the 9(ish) months it takes to complete a season’s worth of episodes. They are normally free to commit to other work during the summer months I believe.
Actors/Actresses film pilots in case their existing programme doesn’t return for production of another season. If it does return they are obviously committed to their existing programme and have to pull out of the pilot project.
