Far too much, especially in the Tennant era (double especially when he stalked about with it held like a gun in every other episode). I cheered when it was destroyed, then was gutted when he got another within five minutes

The phrase was first coined by a Roman, Horace (at least as far as is recorded), but he was referring to a device that was used by the Greeks.

Aristotle (a noted Greek) is also known to have criticised the device.
