What Now for Marvel UK?

Marvel UK banned from producing original super hero content

Disney have said that all super hero content has to be produced in the USA. I would not be surprised if that caused the death of Marvel UK, since in produced most of its content in these shores using British talent. Alan Moore, Alan Davis, Steve Dillon, Grant Morrison, Gary Erskine, Bryan Hitch, Jamie Delano and Dan Abnett all came to Marvel through Marvel UK. Thats an end to that

It could be worse I suppose, since this is only the second stupid edict I am aware of Disney forcing on Marvel. The first being the cancellation of the excellent Spectacular Spiderman cartoon series

Spectacular Spider-Man was essentially dead long before that. The ratings were bad, and the DVDs weren't selling well. That may not be a reflection of the show's quality, but Disney can't really be blamed for not sticking with it. And if the new Ultimate Spider-Man series is as good as the art looks, canning Spectacular Spider-Man may have been a blessing in disguise.

It won't be an end to Panini's Marvel UK, they still sell loads of the reprint mags. I think this only affects 2 original content mags but, obviously, it means a lot of freelancers will be down on work for a while.
Unfortunately Panini and Disney have a history of stepping on each other's toes...

However, British talent hasn't been being pooled to the US through Marvel UK for years. It really isn't the company it used to be over here.

I think most, if not all, of the creators you name there were actually picked up by DC, not Marvel US, after considerable work in the UK for various companies, not just Marvel UK.

And for Disney to have cancelled Spec Spidey would've required that to have been in the purchasing agreement as it happened so soon after the purchase was announced.
Possible but no point to it, especially considering another Spidey cartoon is being worked on.

Terrible news. I really enjoy the Spider-Man comic we have, I find it a better alternative than the garbage Marvel sell me with BND. Our Spidey has a respect for the whole mythology.

They could relaunch "Captain Britain" hmmm

Never forget that Marvel UK created Death's Head, yes? (Mind you, they also ruined him with DH2).

This confirms my fears that Disney would interfere in Marvel's creative growth.

Except that Marvel were intending on commissioning a third series, at least, that's what I was told.

Shame really, it will be hard to beat. What made it so good was their version of the classic story, which was much better than Bendis Ultimate re-boot *thinks about ultimate goblin and shakes head*

They 'were' intending - dependent on ratings and dvd sales but they did poorer than expectations... It was a bigger crime when Wolverine and the X-men was axed but I did like Spec Spidey.

Marvel keep bringing him back every so often but, unfortunately, sales never keep him going. Last attempt was Paul Cornell's brilliant MI:13 which got extended once but then got canned. Cap. Britain was a Marvel US invention, though, just for the UK market.

I love DH - glad Kieron Gillen added him in his S.W.O.R.D series! DH 3.0 was a bit fluffy... DH2.0 popped up in MI:13, though, confusingly...
Dunno how the original DH could fight the Hulk, though, coz he was supposed to be the same size as the Transformers robots

I bet it was so short notice that the stories inside end on cliffhangers! Sadly, Panini had no choice.

No, issue 34 was the first part of a two part story featuring Captain Britain, Captain America and the nearly forgotten British created Spider-Man villain Assassin-8. As long as #35 is allowed to come out on Thursday, it'll be concluded as planned.

Marvel Heroes hasn't been totally cancelled; it's continuing the numbering but changing the name to Marvel Super-Heroes. But without UK originated material.
