I just do not think a character who is essential to the plot of a TV episode will turn out to be from spin-off media. When Neil Gaiman said Idris might be an old friend with a new appearance, that's only going to catch the attention of more casual fans if it's a character they might have already seen on TV.

By the way, this isn't a spoiler. It's just speculation.
