My contract comes to an end for a second time next month and I'm considering the iPhone. But if I can't minimise costs I'll have to forget it again. Are Orange doing any loyalty deals for the iPhone or is it still a 'no go'?

It's a no go on any network. There is just no margin in it for them, and the iPhone sells itself, so no need to sweeten the deal.
