I wasn't surprised. The girls won the promotion deal with the biggest website of the three, I knew at that point they'd won it. It's just like the tasks from previous seasons where the teams design a product and take it to three retailers: there are always two smaller retailers and one large franchise with stores all over the country - the team who persuades the biggest company to take their product always have a huge advantage.

Also, I don't think either app was particularly better than the other. But the boys' app could only ever appeal to anyone in the UK, the girls' was more "global".

Plus, I've been watching reality TV long enough to know misdirection when I see it in the editing.

That seems a good idea, I guess it wouldnt of attracted much interest from UK customers but it would probably do well enough in the global market to do win.
I think you meant wouldn't have........

I wasn't surprised at all because of their app being a very English thing and it wouldn't have any obvious appeal more widely. It was also very naff, going on in that tired and tiresome way about Welsh and sheep and "valleys". The other app had potential for more varied uses, more fun and more universal appeal. You could use it purely to amuse yourself and your friends by listening to random noises, you could use it to block out or retaliate against annoying noises or to play tricks on people for a laugh and they also had noises for specific occasions such as celebrations. However, we were manipulated into thinking the women would lose.

^^^ I think most people come on here for a light-hearted discussion not to have people pull apart any mistake in their post. It is a little pathetic. You could spend all day on here doing that, but it would be a pretty sad waste of your life.

I agree, it didn't seem the best idea but I thought there would still be people out there that would somehow find it funny. The main problem with the girls, they did such bad pitches and did not sell their concept well, but they got the big website so that turned things around for them.

As ever with the design task it's not about the quality of the product it's about getting to the right market. In this case the biggest website

I thought the girls, especially Edna were very very lucky. I was convinced the girls were going to lose because of Edna's crap pitch and the fact that it was all a load of random noises... they had an elephant on their app that didn't make the sound of an elephant

The boys idea seemed a little more together and their pitch went really well... I thought the only downside was that some people may have found it offensive.

No, I've been watching this show long enough to do that when they show one team doing really well it means the other one is going to win it!
Not always. On the cereal task a couple of series ago Kate's "Treasure Flakes" team always looked like they were going to walk all over the Pantsman team - and they did!

They've only been fake in the sense that the companies who ordered products didn't, in fact, expect to get any because they knew the product wouldn't be manufactured. Here the products was manufactured as part of the task.

there's no reason for them not to be real.

I was surprised, big website or no, the girls app was CRAP. I wouldnt go NEAR it. It was amaterish and awful.

The boys one, while offending a load of saddos who enjoy getting offended, was a lot more fun and a lot more professional, I am staggered it didnt get more downloads and think that the results are faked to make the boys look stupid. A BBC directive of the early weeks

I was surprised in the sense that I thought the guys did way better with pitches and presentations but the way it was edited,I had a strong feeling the girls had one before the boardroom started, also the gap in figures revealing made it completely obvious the girls were gonna win

I still love this show but every year it is becoming more like reality shows like survivor/big brother etc where they try to fool you into believing someone has won a task with the edit but then the complete opposite happens. It was a surprise when they first started doing this but now its a shock if they don't.

I don't think the girls "won" the pitch to get the advert with the largest promotional deal. I think the boys failed to impress so they went with the other option just because they had to have something.

I thought the girls did a much better job than the edit gave them credit for -

they conducted market research which told them most apps are "time-wasters"

they ran the idea of annoying noises past the app expert first

they picked something that was applicable globally and not region or language specific

they wrote a snappy blurb for the app

they give it a title starting with A so it would appear near the top of any list

they had "app" in the title so anyone searching for apps would find it

they won the important pitch because it was inoffensive and appropriate globally

From an adult point of view their app seems stupid, but I can well see 11-14 year olds thinking it an hilarious way to go about annoying their friends and teachers with it for an hour or so. The app only needed to be downloaded, it didn't need to be kept for any period of time.

Not at all.
The boys app was a lot crapper than the girls app.
I wouldnt agree with that - however what the girls app was more appropriate to a global market.

I think the boys app was too restrictive in its potential market. The accents and phases used in their app may be funny in the context of British humour - but does that humour transfer well in a global marketplace?

How many people outside Britain would get the "joke" of regional British accents and sterotypes?

I was shocked. But both Apps were an embarrassment, they were absolutely dire.

I think the fact that the girls' app was crap is besides the point. The idea that it has noises on it that could be used to annoy people is a good one. It's not like people would know it's crap before they downloaded it. There's no try before you buy. Once they had downloaded it, the girls had already got the "sale". They got, what was it, 9,000 downloads? Globally, that's nothing. And every single one of those 9,000 could have used it for 10 seconds, said "that's crap" and deleted it.

So it doesn't matter at all that it's crap. All that matters is the idea being one that people might want to get an app for, and getting the big magazine. Which, let's face it, if the boys hadn't had an app with potentially offensive material (for a big magazine), they wouldn't have. Not only was their app crap, but they mucked up their pitch, too.

The girls' app was dire, and the title reminded me of a particular brand of air freshener. All I can say is, there are 9,000 very easily-pleased people out there!

They seem likely though.

As has been said, the boys' app had domestic appeal, the girls' app had more international appeal (but not that much - 9,000 downloads for the entire world is not that many.)

I think the girls got lucky this time to be honest, they didn't win on merit.

Exactly this. When it was announced, I had to do a double take, I just could not believe it. I think the girls app was worse and the boys performed better in the task.
I was stunned - maybe stupidly - but it galled me to see the women winning after the cringeworthy pitch - i will never trust my own judgement on this programme again.

Yes I was totally shocked they won, purely because of their overall performance throughout the task. The boys seemed together, enthusiastic and so on, while the girls didn't have one idea that they all agreed on and weren't exactly very convincing in the group/single pitches.

Obviously with the whole 'global' selling point it is clear now that the boys app was not going to appeal to people in Spain, Tokyo, Denmark, Russia and any country that have no familiarity with English speaking regional accents.

Agree with the opinion that both Apps were awful though! The product (and not thinking about the performance) was poor by both teams really.
