Analyse second task.
I am just starting the thread and havent yet fully gone over it.
First of all I get the feeling that LS isnt daft and wouldnt trust anyone with that kind of money. He most likely has some business plan and a person of his own choosing to run it whom he trusts. They will just end up as all apprentices like Stella English in the end. The tasks really dont prove at all that you could run a business. I am not sure why LS didnt believe that since the boys lost the main presentation they lost the task. Till 6 they had much more downloads. Melody seems to have got the idea right. Always say you dont like the product so you cant be blamed. If next time Leon is on the losing team just bring him in and he goes and not you. Although LS has sometimes fired two but very unlikely. Susan has difficulty in expressing herself maybe english is not her first language. I had no idea what she was getting at but she should have written it down and not just given up. She somehow doesnt seem to fit in. Using a black man for their apps was a very silly idea. Since it was going round the world where not everyone speaks english maybe just noises is better. To be continued. |

Leon must have known in advance that he could have lost the task. Or didnt he think it was possible. He also knew that it was him or Alex to go whoever else he brought in. So if he was staying it would be best to bring in someone who wouldnt bear it too much as a grudge. Why couldnt he think this out in advance instead of changing his mind.

Since there is no money involved in this task its harder to place blame. Its more a matter of luck. Why the person who thought of the 'bad' idea was brought in when no one had a better one seems to be happening all the time as though its his fault they lost. LS is making the same mistake he made with the brand. Just because Leon has made his own business he kept him in. And 'techies' are no good at business.
I think Leon is a phony and so did the dragons who wouldnt even give him 10 grand. The brand I am sure has a real business. LS didnt really fault their idea just how it was developed and Glenn cant be blamed for that. The real question at the end is whom would you trust with 250 grand. Most businesses if you put your mind to it can be made to work even a cleaning one. A military style operation would really test their mettle more. One has to be able to think in advance and have a back up plan if things go wrong. Just being a good salesman or finding a good product is not all it takes to run a company. The only thing these tasks will show is how good you can handle staff. |

It was a rubbish task.
Both were silly ideas and I am suprised that anyone downloaded the apps at all. |

In most series I can usually tell by the second task who is most likely to win. Or at least who isnt. So far no one is really standing out. I think this second task came a bit too early on in the game. There is not much 'individuality' about it. We dont know who made the product, the design of it or the wording on it. This is rather a failing. It would give some idea of the contestants ability. I consider like LS the girls design superior. Who wants a lot of writing. No one likes reading today. All we know is who made the pitches, non of which were really marvellous. Most didnt seem to be prepared at all.

Which was the whole key to winning the task, as Karren put it 'and then the world woke up' - the girls app was global and the boys wasn't. Obviously the girls stumbled on this by accident rather than design, but that's what won them the task. Both Apps were rubbish, but the girls was globally rubbish, the boys only locally

If next time Leon is on the losing team just bring him in and he goes and not you. Although LS has sometimes fired two but very unlikely.
If you bring him in you'll have to have a good reason, because LS will now have Leon coming in again marked as potential 'fall guy'. Also you'll obviously have to have a very good reason to bring Jim in! Looks like the rest of the guys have got their work cut out! Susan has difficulty in expressing herself maybe english is not her first language. I had no idea what she was getting at but she should have written it down and not just given up. That was all clever but very annoying editing. I'm surprised people haven't seen through this. English is obviously her first language, just listen to her speed of elocution. She clearly had described the idea, sort of, but what let her down is... She somehow doesnt seem to fit in. ...she's a bit of a whiny 21 year old. As a 21 year old in business myself I am a bit annoyed that she's representing us. Comments like "she's 12 years older than me!" as if that makes it impossible to get on with Edna is simply ridiculous. I'm not sure she's had a proper business experience before if this is how she reacts to conflict in the office... Using a black man for their apps was a very silly idea. Since it was going round the world where not everyone speaks english maybe just noises is better. The problem was more that only people in the UK appreciated 'regional' accents. Commonwealth and the US, which arguably alone could have usurped 10,000 downloads, don't really 'get' UK regional accents, much like we wouldn't 'get', fully, the distinction between North Dakota and Tennessee in the States. But really it was a bit obvious that they shouldn't restrict their domain to a language based app. |

'Lord_Sugar
Susan in a bit of muddle brain not engaging with lips' From his tweets. She has her card marked, she will be the first of the girls to go. My point was that I would have asked her to write it down, not just to dismiss her altogether. I may say I cant see Edna winning. She may be able to control but like Karren said, she may be good at talking but not good at saying anything. I think Karren is improving and at last getting into her own. Nick as one can see, is already getting too old for this. I am pleased to see that you are in business at such a young age. Maybe you can tell us is it really that easy. LS seems to think just put any rubbish on the net and people will start paying for it today. With his huge resources, why doesnt he do it. I remember with his face cream, although friends with the Harrods boss it took him a long time to get it in. I dont think it would be hard to find a reason to bring Leon in again. He seems to put his foot in it everywhere and has no idea what he is doing. He thinks his good looks will always help him. If I would have been Leon I would have brought Jim in. They have to realise its not just about getting to the 'top' its also about stopping anyone else. Here he knew that it could only be alex or him for the chop, by bringing in Jim it would put a black mark on Jim and if he (Leon)scrapes through it would be harder for Jim to. Its not for nothing they dont like going into the board room even though they know they have nothing to fear. Considering you are following the series so well which I would have expected any wanna be apprentice to, like always watching your opponents in a football match, once you understand how LS mind's work and its not that difficult you should put yourself forward for the next series. Treat it as a football match, you may not be able to score but dont let any goals in. That is basically what Stella did last time and won. 'Just didn't see anything from Alex over the first 2 tasks. Gave Leon a chance as he runs a business so he must have something' . From LS tweets. Really are you that gullible. |

I see on another thread the regulars here have Susan and Glenn to win. Cant understand it. Glenn has been told a techi cant run a business and Susan her lips dont connect with her brain.
Where have I gone wrong? Do they think he meant that at least she has a brain where the others dont. I wonder would any of them trust them with money. I wouldnt. |

LS has often said he doesnt like backroom boys (or girls) and thats why he fired Alex. I would suggest they should have a support team to do that work. Since anyone can do it. But as the setup is now. If I was PM I would put my strongest opposition to do it and not give him a chance to shine. And if I was in the team would do my best not to do it. Or at least they should make a rule that a person shouldnt be in the back office all the time and give everyone a chance.

I notice that many say Susan will go to the end. One must look at LS tweets which he says now not what he said then. He already knows who he will choose and saying about her that her lips are not with her brain is not what someone says about a new partner even for LS. If she gets to the end it can only be because she is never on the losing team. Otherwise she would be the first out. Jim will get to the end because he knows how to get out of the firing line. He admits his mistakes and is even proud of them. Thats what LS likes to hear. He doesnt like an argument of how you justify your mistakes or how many ponies youve got. Thats what these contestants dont understand never argue with LS if you want to win. He has to work with you in the end. Always say hes right unless you really can prove him wrong and get him to agree with you.
I am quite sure LS knows what Jim is up to, and is waiting to pick a real fight with him and show him who is boss. The next task which they all find so difficult is something i never understand. True its sometimes hard to know what the product is. But at least the ones you do know go for them first. Like in an exam do the ones you know first you get the same marks for each. I cant understand them running about from shop to shop all day. They have a phone and yellow pages why not use it. Or are the phone calls restricted or the cost added to the sum. I would send two cars for every item to two shops and see which is cheaper. The boys always seem to do better on the treasure hunt. Which is really a begging one. Seeing its for savoy and the manager there wont accept rubbish and he decides in the end, this may turn out rather different than usual. |

... You're right about using English - but that just underlines how the boys failed to appreciate that the task was being played to a global audience. |

For instance, I can't imagine that she will be able to defend herself in the boardroom. Quote:

Er, no .... LordSirAlan actually dislikes people who say they don't like the product when the task is well and truly over. He thinks it's incredibly disloyal and does not care for those who try to distance themselves after the event instead of speaking up beforehand.

'You wouldn't expect a world beating app in 24 hours'
Why not! The idea of silly noises shouldnt take long. You dont know what they are till you download them. To make them if they all joined it, also not long. Read the BBC web about the app developer of the noises (and what he thought of them), that he was up all night on them with his team and apple wouldnt accept them. It normally takes weeks and now his paying customers all want it in one night. That explains why they used blackberry. If apple wont play why should the bbc. My interest doesnt really go to the personalities whom I dont know but to the tasks and how I would complete them. Very rarely does it coincide with any of the contestants.

My all time favourite is Paul Tulip who was never in the boardroom and perhaps Joanna Riley as well. Both never seemed to put a foot wrong.

More about the treasure hunt or begging task. One has to be a convincing liar and make up a good sob story like my nan in Scotland needs the tartan and I will send you a picture of her wearing it, for you to hang up in your shop. Without a shpiel they wont lower the price, and the girls dont make good liars. I would call in many people off the street to watch the performance and it is filmed. Even though the store owner doesnt really believe you he pays for the show. Since this is for the savoy I wonder how the VAT will work. Most likely they wont just be looking for a toothbrush but for high priced items. Again will they all be branded. I suppose one can say its a sample order for a large hotel just to get the price down. Anything really goes. What does an hotel need? If there is anything on the list of which I dont know the meaning of, I would phone the savoy and ask them or a different hotel, not run around clueless.

Once the noises had been recorded the app content was defined. It all happened in just a few hours, not long enough for it to be likely to be any good. When I download apps I read the summary and reviews so hopefully I know what I'm getting. |

The only thing these tasks will show is how good you can handle staff. Not sure of the techie situation. Lord Sugar was claiming technical mastery for himself this week, and the Junior series went to the geekiest candidate. You have to ask what Lord Sugar knows about their final proposals for the 250k, and what he would want to be involved in if it was viable. I can't see it being a restaurant ,or an estate agents, or psychological consultant services from Edna, On the other hand, even if you had someone with a brilliant technical idea (the next Amstrad couputer idea) and a patent on it, is that the sort of project that you could fund on 250k? The 250k rules out lots of things (manufacturing, property?) So perhaps you end up asking which candidate works in or has an idea for an area that interests his Lordship, and which one, from their CV, is likely to come up with a project that could be set up with 250k. Would he want something that would enhance his reputaion (educational? overseas aid?) or want something simple and money making? Would he be attracted to something to do with electronics or property as he understands both? If its not a consultancy or service that just needs an office, it could just be something cheap that an inventor had dreamed up - which suggests the techie candidates are well placed? How much did it take Phil to take the body rocka into the shops? What else could you set up for 250k? |

http://eu.techcrunch.com/2011/05/12/...prentice-just/ I havent seen mentioned that the candidates themselves have to come up with the idea. If that would be the case why go through with all the tasks just ask them their ideas. I am quite sure its no brilliant new invention, And as I have written I think it will be just an apprentice in the end with a more fancy sounding name without a 100k salary. The 4th task of selling a new beauty product which the BBC says didnt sell at all I suppose for both teams. will most likely tell us a lot more about it. |

If it is his idea that he just wants someone to run with, the winner pre-selects themselves even more than usual. They have to be the one who can build a business, with the right knowledge for that business. It becomes even more specific than in some previous years when all he has wanted is a competent administrator with the right accent to talk to the needed audience. If its only a 250k operation, it would logically also seem to be a smaller job than even those apprentices had with some of his new companies. |

Having thought about it. What product or service would I choose? What we have is ten million plus people knowing about it without any advertising or promotion costs thanks to the BBC. These usually make up the most of start up costs of any product. So one has to utilise this bonus as best as possible by offering something that all of them need and will give repeat orders. Food clothing etc is a very difficult market to penetrate as well as beauty or skin products as we shall find out. And very unlikely one can find something new. To market other peoples products one can always find it cheaper. My idea would be an online magazine paid for by advertisements. If done properly I think even LS would be pleased it would boost his ego no end. Even to have one printed and sold at W H Smith where it is almost impossible for anyone new to get in, would also be a good idea. The main start up costs of advertising have already been done for you and the rest is cheap by comparison. For 250K one could even make a dozen titles. ANY 'BETTER' IDEAS.

The threads are now all about Melody. It seems everyone thinks she will get to the end at least. Having looked at her website, I honestly cant think what she does. She seems to be all over the world at once. No mention could I find of any staff at all. Not even exactly sure what she's supposed to be doing. The company is only a few years old, so not sure what she was doing before that. Something just doesnt sound right and doesnt add up. I get the feeling the interviewers will tear her to pieces. Maybe they keep her for that alone.
