I am looking for an inexpensive soundbar for the bedroom TV. I would prefer one without a separate subwoofer and it would need to have at least one optical digital input (only audio out option from the TV) and at least one phono input for relaying the audio from the sound system downstairs without needing the TV turned on. Any recommendations please? The TV is only a cheap 32" Samsung so I would not really want to pay more than the £240 I paid for that.

The optical input is the killer in your budget.
I'd either use a DAC to convert your TV optical out to phono :

and then use a basic soundbar that has phono inputs :

or my preferred option would be to find space for the subwoofer and get this as it's upgradable to 5.1 and sonically wipes the floor with cheap soundbars:

One of the problems I have found looking up a few models at the lower end of the price scale is the lack of volume control. many models seem to assume you'll plug them into the telly via the headphone socket and use the telly remote to control how much noise they make.

Which is probably not a lot of help when using the optical out which is likely to be fixed level. Even if it was converted to analogue to feed the speakers, with no independent volume control you'd be stuffed somewhat.

Here's another I found within your budget - Optical x 2 / Coaxial x 2 / + Analogue input, with remote control £189 - http://www.play.com/Electronics/Elec...r/Product.html

May be too much of a beast for your bedroom though!
