Galli-what, Tom?
phileq
12-05-2011
I watched the Hand of Fear repeat on BBC4 ... this dates from maybe just at or before the time I started watching Dr Who, so I was very young at the time and didn't really remember it.

So I was a bit surprised to hear them keep pronouncing Gallifrey as Galli-FREE instead of Galli-FRAY.

What was it originally? When did it change, and why? Or has it always been interchangeable?
(After all, pronounciation in Who does seem a bit variable at times, we varyingly get Da-LICK or Da-LECK, and David Tennant couldn't even pronounce the letter O in "police"!)

The first time Gallifrey was ever mentioned was a Pertwee serial called the Time Warrior. Sontaran commander called Linx asked him where we was from to which Pertwee claimed "gallifrey" (pronounced galli-fray)

I've always heard it said fray, even by the doctors enemies, he's never corrected them. So either it's fray or there's two pronunciations (like tomAYto or tomARto)

It's just Tom Baker being Tom Bakerish.

Meanwhile, in Darkly Noon....

Tom Baker strikes me as someone who won't be told. He's probably pronouncing it wrong on purpose because somebody told him that's not how you say it.

Well there was also a point where the 4th Doctor thought all humans came from the captial of Iran!

And, of course, the Fourth Doctor once told Daleks to "spack off".

Sadly, when Tom said Gallifray in this episode all I could think of was the impersonation of him by Dead Ringers. Has anyone heard the one where 'TB' rings up Sylvester McCoy.

SMc: Yes, so are you!

If the 4th Doctor ever calls me I'll see if I can manoeuvre him into saying that instead of just immediately collapsing in a quivering heap. Like a phone version of flushing Gordon Jackson out at the train station in The Great Escape.
