I was around in the 90's but being a kid my musical taste was rather limited and consisted of Spice Girls, Boyzone and other pop giants of the day.
Just wondering if anyone can recommend any good 90's (or 00's anything really) bands that would have fit into the alternative rock/grunge genera that I may not be aware of now. Obviously the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden I know about, but wanna know of any that may have slipped through the net or might not have had the success on the same level of their counterparts.

You might want to check out Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins. All those 3 released some cracking albums around the grunge time. Alice in Chains - Dirt was great, Stone Temple Pilots - Purple and Smashing Pumpkins - Siamese Dream and Melon Collie. There also bands like Faith No More, Mudhoney, Mother Love Bone, Hole (Courtney Love.. URGH!) and of course the Foo Fighters.

o.. and Red Hot Chili Peppers

Thanks there's a few there I haven't heard of I'll check them out.
I stumbled across Mother Love Bone due to Temple Of The Dog, I think i'm in love with the sound of Chris Cornell's voice

Sorry if am being insultingly obvious but Pixies were a pretty big influence on grunge (or Nirvana at least), Surfer Rosa and Doolittle are classics. So too the charmingly named band Butthole Surfers, Locust Abortion Technician is prob their best album. They are mental tho!
The Melvins- Houdini is fantastic too

Kinda post-grunge, but get Veruca Salt's 'American Thighs'...it be an awesome slab of Alt.

...and like poppyblue mentioned: The Melvins 'Houdini' - outstanding!!

Hey you left out Gavin Rossdale's group Bush. I was very much into grunge a few years ago because I was dating this guy who played in a band
So basically all I listened to were the bands you all mentioned (alongside with some girlyish Lifehouse...)
We also listened to this band called "Live". Those were great times!

I've got to give another nod towards Alice In Chains. My personal favourite band from the grunge-era, arguably the only one to straddle the line between grunge and heavy-metal so well.

Got to give L7 a mention, most famous for their hit "Pretend We're Dead" and "Shitlist" which was used on the soundtrack to Natural Born Killers.

Great female grunge band.

Another vote for Bush, and a modern grunge band called We The Faceless.

I have to give another vote to Alice in Chains. Definitely the best grunge band for me, "Dirt" is a masterpiece

I second grazman's recommendations but don't overlook Smashing Pumpkin's debut album Gish because it has some fantastic music on there and a different sound (more psychedelic) than their later albums Siamese Dream or Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Oh and if you can locate them try their b-sides album Pisces Iscariot or their b-sides boxset The Aeroplane Flies High because they're better than most people's main albums... of course I could be biased.

Have you heard of Audioslave? He had some pretty good songs with them.

Check out Belly. Not really grunge, more alt/pop.

Dinosaur jr have to be mentioned. Their 1987 album 'You're living all over me' is pretty much a template for the noisy/melodic template used (or 'ripped off') by many a band of the 90's

Some of my fave songs from that era (although a few are from the 80's) are:

Good Morning Captain - Slint
Steak and Black Onions - Rapeman
My Pal - God
Handsome and Gretal - Babes in Toyland
Little Fury Things - Dinosaur Jr
Schizophrenia - Sonic Youth
The Model - Big Black
Come on Down - Green River
In N Out of Grace - Mudhoney
Saddle Tramp - Dickless
Behemoth - Tad
Jimi - Butthole Surfers

To name but a few.

is awesome...
This.

In fact all of the Smashing Pumpkins albums are good. Check out 'Gish' from 1991 with the excellent 'Rhinoceros' and aforementioned 'Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness' from 1995.

Things go a bit electronic with their 1998 album 'Adore' but is still a great one to listen to and so is 'Machina' from 2000.

A fellow Cable fan! I thought I was the only one who remembers those strange lads from Derby. All three of their albums - Downlift the uptrodden, When animals attack and Sublingual are truly worth seeking out. Here's why -
