Sorry for the long title!
I've got a Samsung Galaxy S on a Tesco contract, and will be going abroad (France and Spain) for the first time since having it. In the past, I've used a pay as you go phone which did not use the internet.
I'm aware of how to make calls and texts and so on, and the prices, and that's fine. What I'm concerned about is that I want to be able to use my Kindle app, but I know that it tries to contact the internet when I use it, which obviously will incur massive costs. Also I know that there are other programmes that want to contact the internet regularly, like the daily weather update and so on. What I am trying to find out, is how do I disable this feature while still being able to use the Kindle, and have the phone turned on? Will it be enough to have Roaming switched off as an option?
I did ask the phone shop in Tesco today, but they weren't entirely sure and wouldn't guarantee anything. I'm wondering whether having flight mode switched on would be better - I won't be making any calls or anything - but then of course I won't be able to receive texts I assume? I am not expecting to receive many texts, but I would like to know that I can be reached in an emergency (if my house burns down or my cat dies or something).
