EastEnders: the year 2000.
Name some storylines which you think were good in the year 2000. 2000 was a brilliant year for EastEnders. John Yorke was just brilliant. The ratings were extremely high; the quality was good too.

Oh I agree, 2000 was a vintage year for EastEnders, and is today considered to be one of its most succesful periods, both ratings and creatively. John Yorke was an amazing Executive Producer. The likes of which has never really been matched. Diederick Santer, to my mind is the only one who has come close, but never quite matched Yorke.
Frank Butcher left Walford, on Bonfire Night after his affair with Pat was revealed to a packed Queen Vic, when then wife Peggy read aloud a letter that he planned to leave her. However, as events over took them, Frank and Pat found themselves face to face with the entire Square, as Peggy's wrath was unleashed, Peggy's slap was so hard, Pat lost one of her earrings lol There was no question of Frank and Peggy reuniting, but over at the Evans house, it did look like they may be able to work through it. Until that is, Roy found Pat's suitcase filled to the brim of saucy items, no doubt she was planning to use with Frank. Disgusted, Roy could take no more. After telling Pat "I never like those earrings...they're cheap and tacky" he branded her a "filthy whore" and threw her ass out into a rain soaked Square. As a car roared out of the Square, a sodden Pat could only scream "Fraaaaaannnk!" as Mr Butcher made another famous East End exit. |

I think 2000 was the year Matthew got revenge on Steve for framing him for Saskia's murder. Loved that episode.

I can remember when the Slaters arrived - I thought their introduction was excellent, and there was real confidence in the way the show was written in those days.

Steve Owen fled Walford, leaving Mel alone in the Square.
Phil and Lisa's turbulent relationship was gripping viewing. At Christmas, Phil drove a wedge between Mel and Lisa by acting all concerned for Mel, who was invited to the Mitchells for dinner. Lisa was not happy about Mel playing gooseberry, and after a glass of wine or two, the two ladies ended up pulling each others hair, and Mels dress got ruined. Cue to Phil helping Mel out of the dress and into bed! Meanwhile Lisa stews at the Vic, with Peggy barely holding it together, her first Christmas without Frank. Peggy smashing up the Vic is one of my all time fave scenes. Anyone got a clip of that?

2000 for me, only became really gripping in the latter half. The di Marco's were gone by that point thankfully - I never really warmed to them apart from Rosa. Apart from Matthew getting his revenge on Steve, do you really remember that much about the first half of the year?
The big Pat/Frank/Peggy showdown in the Vic is probably one of my favourite episodes. Frank and Pat's race to get hold of that letter - and Peggy eventually reading it out in front of everyone. I'd even go as far to say I thought it was far better than Sharongate in how it all unfolded. Sonia's surprise baby really was great too. I don't think I had any idea. Ahh, the days when we didn't know things months in advance, eh? Dot and Ethel's euthanasia storyline was just perfect - I don't think that would've been as effective if it wasn't Dot. She was torn between her love for her best friend and her faith. Ian's bankruptcy also provided a great episode too - and it showed everything was being set up for the big Who Shot Phil story the following year.

For me the euthanasia episode with Dot & Ethel was EE at it`s best. It was so moving. June Brown was superb, for me she still is. .

EastEnders: comparison with the year 2000 to 2011.
Compare 2000, 2001 or 2002 to the year 2011 on EastEnders.

EastEnders: was 2002 a slight letdown from 2001?
2002 was a very good year for EastEnders, one of the best, but I think that it was a slight letdown from the year 2001. During that time, the main focus was was on Kat, Zoe and Anthony. The Little Mo and Trevor storyline reached its climax, and Jamie was murdered by Martin, but I think that it was a slight letdown from the previous two years. Share your views.

I think it was a slight let down but not because it was bad but because 2001 had been SOO good!
The Kat/Zoe/Anthony started to drive me up the wall abit simply because the Kat/Zoe storyline was interesting enough in it's own right without feeling the need to keep the conflict alive by introducing a man, like Zoe or Kat realistically would have stood for anthony falling in and out of love with each of them every other minute BUT I'll make allowances for it because ALOT of it was re-written due to Michelle having personal problems. That aside though I did still think it was a brilliant year, alot of Slater focus though again like 2001: The Slater girls trying to dump trevor's body that wasn't there, Little Mo's trial and imprisonment, Kat's fight to get her out of prison via Donner, Little Mo being released and Trevor tormenting her, Kat/Zoe/Anthony, Trevor/Little Mo house fire and explosion, Little Mo/Billy relationship and marraige, Slaters VS truememans fight in the Vic. BUT we also did have Jamie's death, Steve/Mel/Dan, Steve's car crash, Phil leaving for portugal after Lisa took Louise, Introduction of Alfie, Nana, Daniella as Sam, death of Sharon's boyfriend Tom, Phil beating up Jamie etc |

Meh. IMO, the first half of 2000 was very boring. The late '90s was a lacklusture time for EastEnders, and 2000 saw EE only just recover. Granted, there were a lot of "classic" moments/episodes but, as a whole, I wasn't really enjoying that year until August/September, around the time of Ethel's death/Slaters' arrival.
All in all, it most certainly was not a vintage year. |

I'm amazed that I was only 6, yet all these storylines people are mentioning, I remember them, the Slaters moving into the square, the Mo and Trevor storyline, Sonia's pregnancy, Dot and Ethel, Steve Owen, also was this the year Phil and Grant drove into the canal? I'm quite surprised, my memory isn't that great, but goes to show that the year must have been a good one.

All that was going on was the aftermath of Ian and Mel, Dan getting his revenge on Steve and Frank and Pat going into partnership. Phil and Grant was 1999.
